A computer-implemented method can include receiving a contact point path between a rocker arm pad and a valve tip. The method can include adjusting the contact point path to obtain a modified contact point path that satisfies a design objective of decreased valve tip wear or decreased valve tick. The method can include determining and outputting a custom contour for the rocker arm pad and the camshaft lobe based on the modified contact point path. The custom contoured camshaft lobe can companion with the custom contoured rocker arm pad to produce the modified contact point path for the specified design objective.

Techniques for designing custom contoured rocker arm pads and custom contoured camshaft lobes

A method and system for controlling the engine during a return to idle maneuver when the engine's oil is highly aerated. The system and method will implement a stepped return to idle maneuver when the engine oil has a predetermined amount of aeration. The predetermined amount of aeration is an amount that could cause an engine to stall due to valve lift loss if the engine speed were reduced to the idle speed in the conventional manner.

Stepped idle return for multiair equipped engines with high aeration

A system for controlling a valve in an engine is provided. The system includes a pump piston operably coupled to the valve. The valve is displaceable with electro-hydraulic variable valve actuation. The system also includes a cam lobe operably coupled to the pump piston. The cam lobe includes a profile configured so rotation of the cam lobe directs movement of the pump piston. The pump piston movement includes an increasingly accelerated first duration, followed by a decreasingly accelerated second duration, followed by an increasingly accelerated third duration, wherein when the valve is actuated the valve movement is in accordance with the configuration of the cam lobe.
