The present invention relates to a polymeric composition which has an excellent combination of properties for use in making seals and gaskets for utilization in appliances, automotive applications, and building applications, such as window glazing gaskets. These polymeric compositions offer excellent dimensional stability, low compression set, outstanding sealing characteristics, low temperature flexibility, heat resistance and ultra-violet light resistance. The present invention more specifically discloses a polymeric composition having excellent characteristics for utilization in manufacturing seals and gaskets including dimensional stability, low compression set and outstanding sealing characteristics, said polymeric composition being comprised of a blend of (A) a thermoplastic resin selected from the group consisting of polypropylene, polyethylene, poly phenylene ether polystyrene, and styrene containing copolymer resins, (B) an elastomeric polymer selected from the group consisting of block copolymer comprising a first polymeric block that is comprised of repeat units that are derived from a vinyl aromatic monomer and a second block that is comprised of repeat units that are derived from a conjugated diolefin monomer, wherein the repeat units in the second block are hydrogenated, and wherein the repeat units in the second block are elastomeric in nature, and a crosslinked olefinic elastomer, (C) a high molecular weight crosslinked diene elastomer comprised of repeat units that are derived from conjugated diene monomer selected from the group consisting of 1,3-butadiene and isoprene, wherein the high molecular weight diene elastomer has a weight average molecular weight of at least about 200,000, and (D) an oil.

Polymeric composition for seals and gaskets

The present invention relates to a soft thermoplastic elastomer composition that is free of thermoplastic resin that can be utilized in manufacturing shoe sole inserts, seals, gaskets, wheels, and that can be overmolded on a hard substrate, such as a metal or a thermoplastic resin, for grips or handles on various household items. The present invention more specifically discloses a thermoplastic elastomer composition that is made by a process comprising: (1) mixing (A) a block copolymer comprising a first polymeric block that is comprised of repeat units that are derived from a vinyl aromatic monomer and a second block that is comprised of repeat units that are derived from a conjugated diolefin monomer, wherein the repeat units in the second block are hydrogenated, and wherein the repeat units in the second block are elastomeric in nature, (B) a crosslinkable elastomer, and (C) an oil, to produce an un-crosslinked three component blend; and (2) dynamically crosslinking the crosslinkable elastomer in the un-crosslinked three component blend during a thermo-mechanical mixing step; wherein the thermoplastic elastomer composition is void of thermoplastic resins.

A thermoplastic vulcanizate composition comprised of (a) thermoplastic resin selected from the group consisting of polyphenylene ether, polypropylene, polyethylene, and polystyrene, (b) at least one elastomer selected from the group consisting of butadiene-isoprene copolymer rubbers, copolymers of a conjugated diolefin monomer and an acrylate monomer, copolymers of a conjugated diolefin monomer and an methacrylate monomer, copolymers of a conjugated diolefin monomer and a vinyl aromatic monomer, copolymers of a conjugated diolefin monomer and an acrylonitrile monomer, blends of polyisoprene rubber with styrene-butadiene rubber, wherein the elastomer is at least partially crosslinked, wherein the repeat units in the elastomer are distributed throughout the elastomer in an essentially random manner, and (c) oil.

Thermoplastic vulcanizate composition

The subject invention discloses a thermoplastic composition which is comprised of a blend of a thermoplastic resin and an elastomer, wherein said thermoplastic resin is selected from the group consisting of polyphenylene ether and polystyrene, wherein said elastomer is comprised of a conjugated diene selected from 1,3-butadiene and isoprene, wherein said elastomer is highly branched, wherein said elastomer is characterized by having a G' and G&#x2033; frequency crossover of no more than 4 radians/s at 100&#xb0; C., wherein the thermoplastic resin is present in an amount which is within the range of about 5 parts by weight to about 95 parts by weight, and wherein the elastomer is present in an amount which is within the range of about 5 parts by weight to about 95 parts by weight, based upon the total weight of the thermoplastic composition.

Thermoplastic composition

The present invention discloses an article of manufacture comprising a soft thermoplastic elastomer composition overmolded onto a hard substrate, wherein the soft thermoplastic composition includes (a) 5 to 60 parts by weight of a thermoplastic resin, (b) 5 to 70 parts of a rubbery elastomer comprised of repeat units that are derived from a conjugated diene monomer, wherein the rubbery elastomer is optionally at least partially crosslinked, and wherein the rubbery polymer is a solution polymer, (c) 5 to 90 parts of a highly saturated elastomer selected from the group consisting of styrene-ethylene butylene-styrene polymers, styrene-ethylene propylene-styrene polymers, hydrogenated polybatadiene, hydrogenated polyisoprene, hydrogenated styrene-isoprene random copolymers, hydrogenated styrene-butadiene random copolymers, and (d) 15 to 200 parts by weight of an oil.

A thermoplastic elastomer composition comprised of (a) a thermoplastic resin selected from the group consisting of polyphenylene ether, polypropylene, polyethylene, and polystyrene, (b) a block copolymer selected from the group consisting of styrene-ethylene butylene-styrene, styrene-ethylene propylene-styrene, hydrogenated polybutadiene, hydrogenated polyisoprene, hydrogenated styrene-isoprene random copolymer, styrene-ethylene propylene block copolymer, styrene-ethylene ethylene propylene-styrene and hydrogenated styrene-butadiene random copolymers, (c) a core-shell polymer comprised of a polymeric core and a polymeric shell with the proviso that the polymeric core and/or the polymeric shell may be crosslinked, and (d) an oil.

The present invention discloses a thermoplastic elastomer composition which is comprised of (a) a thermoplastic resin selected from the group consisting of polyolefin resin, polyphenylene ether, and polystyrene, wherein the thermoplastic resin is present at a level of up to 60 parts by weight, (b) 5 to 90 parts by weight of a rubbery elastomer that is comprised of repeat units that are derived from a conjugated diene monomer selected from 1,3-butadiene and isoprene, wherein the repeat units in the rubbery polymer are distributed through the rubbery polymer in an essentially random manner, wherein the rubbery polymer is a solution polymer, and is optionally, at least partially crosslinked, (c) 5 to 90 parts by weight of a highly saturated elastomer selected from the group consisting of styrene-ethylene butylene-styrene, styrene-ethylene propylene-styrene, hydrogenated polybutadiene, hydrogenated polyisoprene, hydrogenated styrene-isoprene random copolymers, hydrogenated styrene-isoprene block copolymers, hydrogenated styrene-butadiene random copolymers, hydrogenated styrene-butadiene block copolymers, hydrogenated styrene-isoprene block copolymers, and hydrogenated styrene-isoprene/butadiene-styrene block copolymer, and (d) 15 to 600 parts by weight of an oil.

The subject invention discloses a thermoplastic composition which is comprised of a blend of a thermoplastic polyolefin resin and a modified elastomer, wherein said thermoplastic polyolefin resin selected at least from the group of polyethylene, isotactic polypropylene, syndiotactic polypropylene, polypropylene impact copolymers containing about 1-7% by weight of ethylene, butene, hexene, or octene, polyolefin copolymers such as ethylene-butene, hexene, or octene, polybutene, reactor grade modified polypropylene, metallocene polypropylene, oxypolypropylene, wherein said modified elastomer is comprised of a conjugated diene selected from 1,3-butadiene and isoprene, wherein said modified elastomer is highly branched, wherein said modified elastomer is characterized by having a G&prime; and G&Prime; frequency crossover of no more than 4 radians/s at 100&deg; C., wherein the thermoplastic polyolefin is present in an amount which is within the range of about 5 parts by weight to about 95 parts by weight, and wherein the modified elastomer is present in an amount which is within the range of 5 parts by weight to about 95 parts by weight, based upon the total weight of the thermoplastic composition.

A method of making silica loaded elastomer masterbatches or compounded productive elastomer stocks with or without the simultaneous extrusion of component profiles is provided. A twin-screw extruder is used to mix the elastomeric stock in multiple mixing zones at controlled temperatures in which a concurrent chemical reaction takes place between the silica coupler, the silica, and/or the diene based elastomer. Silica, elastomer, silica coupler, and other ingredients are fed into the twin screw extruder continuously through precise loss-in-weight or volumetric feeders. Chemical reactions(s) in the elastomer/silica based composition take place within the twin-screw extruder while the composition is mixing. The product is forced through a profile die mounted at the exit of the extruder and formed into the shape of the desired component. The maximum rate of mixing tends to be a function of the heat transfer efficiency, the conveying capacity of the screws, and the mechanical strength of the extruder.
