An edgewise orthodontic bracket for use in an edgewise or straight-wire technique having a standard horizontally opening rectangular archwire slot and a mesiodistally extending tunnel or lumen separate from and vertically angled to the archwire slot for receiving a relatively small flexible wire during the use of an undersize rectangular archwire in the archwire slot to apply a force to the bracket for capturing lost torque.

An improved orthodontic bracket including a horizontally opening archwire slot for a main aligning archwire for allowing crown tipping, limiting root uprighting, and controlling torquing, and a relatively small horizontal uprighting slot, tunnel or lumen extending substantially mesiodistally for receiving an additional small wire for uprighting teeth and eliminating the need to use individual uprighting springs in the final stage of patient treatment.

An orthodontic appliance includes brackets, an arch wire and a hook for receiving an elastic member. The hook is movable from a first position when the elastic is not positioned about the hook to a second position when the elastic member is positioned about the hook. In one embodiment, the orthodontic appliance includes a clamp pivotable about the arch wire, a tube connected to the clamp and to the hook, and a second wire connected to the tube and to at least one of the brackets. In another embodiment, magnets are secured to the arch wire. One of the magnets can pivot about the arch wire and includes a hook attached thereto. In another embodiment, an orthodontic appliance includes brackets, an arch wire, a clamp secured to the arch wire, a hook and a wire. The wire is secured to the clamp and the hook. The hook is movable in response to a force applied by an elastic member. In another embodiment, an orthodontic appliance includes brackets, an arch wire, a hook and a wire segment. The wire segment is connected to one of the brackets and the hook. The hook is movable in response to a force applied by an elastic member. One of the brackets includes a slot and the wire segment extends into the slot. In another embodiment, an orthodontic appliance includes brackets, a tube and an arch wire extending through the brackets and tube. A spring loaded hook is connected to the clamp by a hinge.

An orthodontic appliance for correcting minor incisor irregularities and/or retaining incisors in orthodontically corrected positions, which includes a labial plate engaging the labial surfaces of the incisors, a lingual bar or plate engaging the lingual incisal surfaces, and shape memory wire interconnecting the ends of the labial plate with the lingual bar and resiliently urging the plate and bar toward each other so that when the appliance is mounted on the teeth of a patient, it will actively and continuously grip the incisors for tooth control and to prevent dislodgement.

An orthodontic appliance includes a pin and a bracket. The pin has first and second portions joined by a bight. The first portion of the pin includes a pair of tie wings. The bracket includes a base with a pair of arms extending therefrom terminating in tie wings. A platform is positioned on the base between the arms. A first slot separates the tie wings. A second slot extends generally perpendicularly to the first slot through both arms and the platform. In use, the base of the bracket is attached to a tooth, an archwire is positioned in the first slot and the second portion of the pin is inserted through the second slot, such that the tie wings are adjacent the first slot. A ligature tie is then positioned about the tie wings to hold the archwire in place. In an alternative embodiment, an extension on the pin is bent about a portion of the bracket to secure the bracket to the archwire. The ligature tie is eliminated.

A method to aid in the identification and removal of orthodontic attachment adhesives characterized by incorporating a fluorescent agent in the adhesive and inspecting the oral cavity with ultraviolet light which excites the fluorescent agent by which the excess adhesive can be recognized and removed by a dental tool.

A molar tube appliance including a molar or buccal tube for mounting on a molar and for receiving a lip bumper or a face bow, wherein the tube has a flared opening with the larger end of the opening being at the mesial end. A combination edgewise bracket for selective use in crown tipping root uprighting or torquing, which includes a pair of labiobuccally opening archwire slots one of which when coacting with an archwire and there being selective forces applied between the archwire and bracket will allow crown tipping and root uprighting movements and the other of which when coacting with a rectangular archwire may provide both torquing and mesio-distal axial control. The other slot may function to cause or stabilize tooth movement in three dimensions.

An improved torquing appliance for use with any orthodontic treatment technique to apply either palatal or labial root torquing forces to any one or more teeth. The auxiliary is in the form of an arcuate wire of highly resilient material such that it will not deform when activated and will tend to return to its passive state, and which includes at least a portion that can be easily secured to a bracket against relative rotation therewith.
