An optical article including at least one optical fiber and a printable layer connected to the optical fiber. The printable layer including randomly spaced printed ink shapes for avoiding or controlling optical attenuation. A method and an apparatus for making optical articles with the randomized ink shape spacings are also disclosed.

A method and apparatus for guiding a length of material such as optical fibers or optical fiber ribbons under tension in a fiber optic cable or ribbon manufacturing method. A first embodiment of the present invention requires that certain radii of curvature be maintained or exceeded for either the optical fiber or optical fiber ribbon. In a second embodiment of the present invention, the guide for the length of material is required to conform to a guiding surface.

Method and apparatus for guiding fibers or ribbons under tension

A method and apparatus for extruding a plastic rod having helical slots in its external surface includes the use of a die including a relieved exit end face, resulting in a more uniform drag on the plastic melt. Plastic rods so formed are used in slotted core type optical fiber telecommunication cables. The die includes internal channels which form peripheral ribs on the plastic rod. The channels may follow either a helical or a straight path.

Method and apparatus for use in the manufacture of optical cable slotted

A method of stranding light waveguide ribbon cables, such as slotted core type cables, including stacks of light waveguide ribbons. A radially inward light waveguide ribbon in a stack is stranded at a lower tension than a radially outward light waveguide ribbon in the stack. The stack of light waveguide ribbons may be disposed in other slotted carriers such as U-shaped members or folded tapes.

In a ribbon type fiber optic cable there is disposed a stack of fiber optic ribbons, each composed of a set of individually coated optical fibers in a planar relationship to one another with the set of coated optical fibers also coated by a common coating of ultraviolet light cured material. The coefficient of friction between adjacent ribbons in a stack is equal to or less than 0.70.

A light waveguide cable contains a layer of U-shaped carriers around a central core. Each U-shaped carrier contains a light waveguide fiber, bundle, ribbon, or ribbon stack. Carrier legs have a predetermined hinge line at a distance from the carrier base greater than the thickness of the light waveguide fiber, bundle, ribbon or ribbon stack. The carrier legs may have a smaller thickness or a concavity at the hinge line.

A light waveguide cable includes a compartment holding at least two side-by-side stacks of light waveguide ribbons. The cable is so dimensioned that the order of the ribbons within any stack, and the relative positions of the stacks with respect to each other within any compartment, do not change under normal cable handling conditions.

Cable utilizing multiple light waveguide stacks

An optical fiber ribbon composite, each ribbon joined to adjacent ribbon by a flexible web member, the web member having sufficient length so that the optical fiber ribbons can be moved to positions where the plane delimited by the optical fibers of any given ribbon is spaced apart from, but generally parallel with the plane(s) delimited by the optical fibers of the other ribbons of the composite. One or more of the composites is used as a component of a fiber optic cable.
