An article, includes a porous ceramic honeycomb body and a housing disposed on at least one of an outer periphery of the porous ceramic honeycomb body and opposing end faces of the porous ceramic honeycomb body, wherein the housing exerts a compressive force on the porous ceramic honeycomb body in at least one of radial direction and axial direction. A method of making the article, includes heating to greater than or equal to about 200 C the housing, crimping the housing tightly around the honeycomb body while the housing is greater than or equal to about 200 C, and cooling the housing. The housing exerts a compressive force on the porous ceramic honeycomb body in at least one of radial direction and axial direction by shrinking on cooling more than the honeycomb body.

A composite thermal barrier and methods of applying the composite thermal barrier to a metallic surface within a combustion chamber of an engine. The composite thermal barrier includes at least one metallic support structure, a metallic skin, and an insulation material. Also disclosed is a method for producing a ceramic article involving mixing the inorganic batch materials with the low amount of pore former, adding an organic binder and a solvent, forming a green body; and firing the green body. An aluminum titanate ceramic article having a predominant crystal phase of aluminum titanate and a material composition including aluminum, titanium, silica, an alkaline earth metal (e.g., at least one selected from the group of strontium, calcium, barium, or combinations), and a rare earth metal (e.g., at least one selected from the group consisting of yttrium, lanthanum, and combinations) and methods of making such aluminum titanate bodies are described. An oxide of yttrium metal or lanthanide metals is preferably used as a sintering aid in combination with the other compositional components to enable firing of the resulting green body at a lower heating temperature of less than 1500&#xb0; C., and more preferably between 1400&#xb0;-1450&#xb0; C., with a preferable hold time of less than 8 hours, more preferably of 6 to 8 hours.

Diesel engine exhaust filtration systems, and ceramic honeycomb wall flow exhaust filters for such systems, wherein the filters comprise axially centralized filter sections having a higher heat capacity and/or a higher gas flow resistance than peripheral filter sections disposed radially outwardly thereof, the filters thereby exhibiting increased resistance to thermal damage from filter regeneration over-heating.
