A method and system for operating a vehicle that includes an automatic transmission with a torque converter clutch is described. In one example, the method includes predicting a time that the torque converter clutch will open so that stopping rotation of the engine may be requested before the torque converter clutch is opened. The stopping rotation of the engine is requested to conserve fuel.

Methods and system for stopping an engine of a hybrid vehicle

Systems and methods for operating an engine that may selectively enter and exit a fuel cut-off mode are described. In one example, the method holds the engine in the fuel cut-off mode even though a propulsive effort pedal is applied. A vehicle includes a motor between an engine and transmission and a controller configured to control motor and engine torque during an upshift to generate a reserve torque during a preparatory phase applied to the transmission during a torque phase. The controller increases engine torque for the reserve torque, and decreases motor torque such that combined engine and motor torque satisfy driver demanded torque without retarding spark when available motor torque is insufficient to provide the reserve torque. A method for controlling a vehicle having a motor connected between an engine and a transmission includes increasing engine torque for reserve torque to be applied during a torque phase of an upshift responsive to available motor torque being insufficient to satisfy the reserve torque, and reducing engine torque by retarding spark only if combined engine torque and motor torque exceeds driver demand torque after reducing motor torque to a minimum threshold.

Engine/motor torque control for torque hole filling in a hybrid vehicle during automatic transmission shifting

A vehicle includes an engine and an electric machine coupled to a gearbox. A controller is programmed to predict, at an onset of a shift, a supplemental torque profile to fill a torque hole expected during the shift and an available electric machine torque during the shift. The controller is further programmed to, in response to the supplemental torque profile exceeding the available electric machine torque during the shift, operate the engine from the onset to achieve a torque reserve in anticipation of increasing the engine torque.

Hybrid vehicle powertrain torque hole fill during transmission shift

Method and systems are provided for adjusting an engine torque in response to changes in a desired engine torque. In one example, a method may comprise responsive to increasing desired engine torques, monotonically decreasing an alternator torque to a first level from a second level when not injecting fuel to engine cylinders, and stepping up the alternator torque from the first level to the second level while initiating engine combustion, and then monotonically decreasing the alternator torque from the second level to the first level in response to the alternator torque reaching the first level. In this way, a method may comprise adjusting a load exerted on an engine by an alternator mechanically coupled to said engine during both cylinder combustion, and during non-fueling conditions.

Methods and systems for efficient engine torque control

A control system and method for controlling a multiple gear ratio automatic transmission in a powertrain for an automatic transmission having pressure activated friction torque elements to effect gear ratio upshifts. An individual driving value is set as a function of an accelerator pedal position. In turn, a powertrain characteristic is set as a function of the individual driving style. The set powertrain characteristic may be modified on the basis of a feedback value corresponding to learned preferences of a driver. The modified powertrain characteristic is then either automatically implemented for operation of a powertrain or communicated as a choice for implementation. The feedback value is updated per a response to automatic implementation or choice communication.

Driver aware adaptive shifting

A multiple ratio transmission having an input shaft, an output shaft and oncoming clutch and off-going clutch for effecting ratio upshifts is provided. The transmission also includes a transmission controller configured for controlling shifts. During the torque phase of a ratio upshift, the controller increases input torque. Next, the controller estimates an oncoming clutch target torque. The controller controls a torque input to ensure the off-going clutch remains locked. The controller measures an actual transmission value for a torque transmitting element of the transmission and corrects the oncoming clutch target torque using the actual transmission value whereby an increasing torque for the oncoming friction element is achieved with minimal torque transients along the output shaft during the upshift.
