Disclosed are a method, system, program and data structure for implementing a records retention policy by storing selected files for designated lengths of time and then deleting them only when that time has passed. Embodiments of the invention perform this function in an efficient database-free manner. Embodiments of the invention can perform this function by utilizing existing storage directory tree functionality provided by any computer operating system organized under a retention directory coupled with a mechanism for preventing unauthorized deletions of files designated for retention. Expiration of retained files may be managed through directory structure using directory names corresponding to expiration dates determined from identified retention periods for retained files. Files may be further protected from erasure by a kernel mode process which prevents erasure of any files contained in the retention directory.

Efficient non-database file-expiration management for document retention

An archival retention policy is associated with at least one of the directories in the hierarchical file system, wherein the retention policy applies to files included in the associated directory, and wherein the retention policy specifies a retention time indicating a time period during which a file is subject to the retention policy.

A determination is made as to whether a retention rule is provided for the source file. A command is transmitted to a file system to copy the source file data to a versioned file having the generated versioned file name and the generated versioned file name is added to a retention index file. The retention index file is processed to determine whether to purge versioned files according to the retention rule provided for the source file.

A backup program, method and system is disclosed that monitors changes to a file in a storage, checks whether backup settings related to the file already exist and requests and applies backup settings related to the file in response to the file being changed if they do not. The backup settings are applied to control operation of a backup system to make one or more backup copies of the file. The backup settings may be electively saved to be applied automatically in the event of future changes to the file without requesting the settings. One or more lists may be used to identify (e.g. include or exclude) files for backup. Files may be identified by different categories including file name, file type, or file type group associated with a particular application. A typical backup system may save backup copies to a storage area network, e.g. controlled by a backup server.

The update request to a target file that is directed to the file system is processed, wherein the target file is in a mirror copy relationship with a mirror file. A determination is made as to whether a copy operation from the target file to the mirror file is in progress and whether bytes to update in the target file have been copied to the mirror file in response to determining that the copy operation is in progress. The update data is copied to the bytes to update in the target file in response to determining that the bytes to update have not been copied to the mirror file, wherein the update data is subsequently copied to the mirror file during subsequent progress of the copy operation.

It is determined whether an indicators map is to be associated with a source file that is being opened, wherein the indicators map indicates which source blocks of the source file have been updated since last being transferred to a target file. In response to determining that the indicators map exists, it is determined whether the indicators map is to be trusted based on a last modified time and a last source file size stored in the indicators map and the source file. In response to determining that the indicators map is to be trusted, the indicators map is initialized. Then, in response to receiving a write for the source file, the indicators map is updated to indicate which portion of the source file has been modified.

Recording notations per file of changed blocks coherent with a draining agent

Provided are implementations for improved access to information stored on a storage device. A plurality of first nodes and a second node are coupled to one another over a communications pathway, the second node being coupled to the storage device for determining meta data including block address maps to file data in the storage device, and the first nodes being configured for accessing file data from the storage device using said meta data, wherein at least one first node caches data including meta data for a file accessed by said first node. A file application on said first node is configured to get requested file data by accessing said cached data for the file. A file notification system sends a file change notification to said first node indicating changes affecting the cached data, wherein the file application on the first node inspects the change notification to determine whether to get the requested file data directly using said cached data, whereby file accesses may be effected for an extended time with data locally cached at first nodes of the system.

Low overhead methods and apparatus for shared access storage devices

Provided are a method, system, and article of manufacture for enabling access to remote storage for use with a backup program. Access is enabled to remote storage offered by an Internet Service on a remote server over the Internet. Indication is maintained of files on a source drive in a backup set to store on the remote storage that have a real-time backup status. Te backup set is stored on the remote storage. A modification to a file on the source drive is detected and a determination is made from the indication whether the file being modified is indicated as having the real-time backup status. The modification is transferred to the file to the backup set at the remote storage in response to determining that the file being modified is indicated as having the real time status.

Enabling access to remote storage for use with a backup program

Provided are a method, system, and program for migrating source data to target data. A write request is received to write application data to source data not yet migrated to the target data. Information is generated for the write request indicating the source data to which the application data is written. The application data is written to the source data. A request is received to migrate source data to target data and indication is returned to retry the request to migrate in response to determining that the requested source data to migrate overlaps source data indicated in the generated information for one write request.
