A novel projection system includes a light source, a phase modulator, an amplitude modulator, and a controller having temporal lightfield simulation capabilities. The phase modulator spatially modulates a lightfield from the light source to generate an intermediate image on the amplitude modulator. The amplitude modulator spatially modulates the intermediate image to form a final image. The controller models the phase state of the phase modulator during transitions between phase modulator frames and generates lightfield simulations of the intermediate image during the transition. The controller utilizes the lightfield simulations to generate and provide sets of amplitude drive values to the amplitude modulator at a faster rate than that at which the phase modulator is capable of switching.

Temporal modeling of phase modulators in multi-modulation projection

A projector controller includes an object detector and control electronics, and is configured to protect audience members from intense light imposing an exclusion zone in front of a projector. The object detector is configured to optically sense a presence of an object in a detection region beneath the exclusion zone and above the audience members. The control electronics is configured to control the projector when the object detector indicates the presence of the object in the detection region. A method for protecting audience members from intense light imposing an exclusion zone in front of an output of a projector includes: (i) optically sensing a presence of an object in a detection region between the exclusion zone and the audience members, and (ii) controlling the projector when the presence of the object is sensed in the detection region.

Projector controller and associated method

A novel high efficiency image projection system includes a beam-steering modulator, an amplitude modulator, and a controller. In a particular embodiment the controller generates beam-steering drive values from image data and uses the beam-steering drive values to drive the beam-steering modulator. Additionally, the controller utilizes the beam-steering drive values to generate a lightfield simulation of a lightfield projected onto the amplitude modulator by the beam-steering modulator. The controller utilizes the lightfield simulation to generate amplitude drive values for driving the amplitude modulator in order to project a high quality version of the image described by the image data.

System and method for displaying high quality images in a dual modulation projection system

A non-transitory computer-readable-medium storing instructions that, when executed by a processor of an image projector, cause the image projector to perform operations including receiving a first image data, determining a thermal state of the image projector based at least in part on a content of the first image data, generating a second image data based on the first image data and the thermal state; emitting light in response to the second image data, and projecting an image onto a screen based on the emitted light, wherein the first image data corresponds to a frame of a video, and the second image data corresponds to the frame of the video.

Thermal compensation in image projection

An image projector includes an image data input, a controller, a light source, illumination optics, an imaging spatial light modulator (SLM), and imaging optics. The controller is coupled to receive the image data and is operative to determine a thermal state of the image projector. The controller also adjusts the image data depending on the thermal state of the image projector to generate thermally adjusted image data. The thermal state of facilitates adjustment of the imaging data, because the thermal state is indicative of changes in the lightfield incident on the SLM.

In one embodiment the present invention includes a display system for displaying video. The display system includes a backlight layer and an LCD layer. The display system controls the backlight layer and the LCD layer to emulate a cathode ray tube response. This emulation may be accomplished by applying a gamma function to a gamma corrected input signal. In this manner, the effects resulting from the 'crushed blacks' phenomenon may be reduced.

Methods and apparatus are provided for backlighting a dual modulation display device. Each type of light source comprises a multi-primary light source having two or more primary color light emitters having different primary color characteristics from corresponding primary color emitters of other types of light source. Methods may comprise receiving illumination target values for a plurality of locations on the front modulator corresponding to the plurality of light sources, each of the locations on the front modulator configured to be illuminated by two or more of the plurality of light sources, determining primary color drive values source based on the primary color characteristics for that primary color and the illumination target value for the location corresponding to that light source, and driving the primary color light emitters or each type of light source based on the primary color drive values.

Embodiments of the invention relate generally to computer-based image processing, and more particularly, to systems, computer-readable mediums, methods, and apparatuses to operate a rear modulator in a high dynamic range display to, among other things, characterize input images into pixel characteristics which may be data-reduced representations of a group of pixels corresponding to the input image, and to relate a modulation value intensity image to a weighted combination of the pixel characteristics. The modulation value intensity image may be used to derive a rear modulator drive signal, which, turn, may be configured to control one or more modulating elements to generate a low resolution image of the input image at the rear modulator.
