Dynamic range extension of a base station. In one instance, the base station includes a base station modem having a modulator-demodulator, a clock buffer providing an advanced time signal to the modulator-demodulator, a receiver buffer coupled between the modulator-demodulator and a transceiver, a transmitter buffer coupled between the modulator-demodulator and the transceiver, and an electronic processor. The electronic processor is configured to determine a first amount by which to modify a range of a service region of the base station. The electronic processor is also configured to introduce a first delay in the receiver buffer corresponding to the first amount and introduce a second delay in the transmitter buffer corresponding to the first amount.

Methods and corresponding systems in a Viterbi decoder include computing a maximum likelihood (ML) path in a Viterbi trellis in response to executing a first Viterbi algorithm. Thereafter, one or more merge points are selected on the ML path in a second Viterbi algorithm, wherein the merge points each have a path metric difference, which is a difference between an ML path metric at the merge point and a non-surviving path metric at the merge point. Merge points are selected based upon relative path metric differences associated with nodes on the ML path. Next, alternate paths in the Viterbi trellis are computed based on the ML path with alternate paths substituted at corresponding merge points. A passing decoded bit sequence is output in response to passing an error check, wherein the passing decoded bit sequence is associated with one of the one or more alternate paths.

Methods and corresponding systems in a Viterbi decoder include selecting an input symbol in an input block, wherein the input block has a plurality of input symbols, wherein each input symbol has a Boolean value, a quality value, and an associated stage, and wherein the selected symbol is selected based upon the quality value of the selected symbol relative to a quality value of other input symbols in the input block. Thereafter, the Boolean value of the selected symbol is complemented to produce a complemented symbol. The complemented symbol is substituted for the selected symbol to produce an alternate input block. A Viterbi algorithm is executed using the alternate input block to produce an alternate decoded bit sequence, which is then checked for errors using an error check. The alternate decoded bit sequence is output in response to the alternate decoded bit sequence passing the error check.

A decoding circuit includes a mixed modulation memory access circuit responsive to burst rejection information. The mixed modulation memory access circuit selectively accesses burst memory locations containing a valid burst of coded bits. The mixed modulation memory access circuit selectively avoids accessing burst memory locations containing a rejected burst of coded bits based on the burst rejection information. In one example, the mixed modulation memory access circuit accesses the valid burst when the burst rejection information indicates that the memory location contains valid bursts. In one example, the mixed modulation memory access circuit generates zero confidence information when the burst rejection information indicates that the memory location contains rejected bursts.

Apparatus and method for decoding bursts of coded information

An apparatus for acquiring a pseudo-random (PN) sequence timing for a code division multiple access (CDMA) radiotelephone. A buffer stores samples of representations of at least one pilot signal. A correlator coupled to the buffer is operable to correlate at least a portion of the samples with a PN sequence at each of a plurality of different PN offsets to produce corresponding correlation energies. A controller coupled to the correlator interrupts the correlator as soon as the PN sequence at a particular PN offset produces a correlation energy at least equal to an energy threshold.

The mobile station () may detect the position parameter of the second energy/position pair being within a minimum separation associated with the position parameter of the first energy/position pair. The mobile station () may also detect the energy parameter of the second energy/position pair being greater than the energy parameter of the first energy/position pair. Accordingly, the mobile station () may replace the first energy/position pair on the list with the second energy/position pair.

Method and mobile station for reporting multi-path signals based on minimum separation

By time-sharing demodulator hardware between a primary data path (,), a power control data path (,), and a received signal strength indicator (RSSI) path (,), an entire power control data path (,) can be implemented in a demodulator (,) of a spread spectrum subscriber unit receiver with a low increase in gate count. The primary data path (,) and the power control data path (,) time-share a complex conjugate generator (,), a complex multiplier (,), and a real component extractor (,). Due to timing requirements, though, the channel estimation filter (,) of the primary data path cannot be time-shared with the power control data path. Instead, dynamic coefficient scaling is added to an infinite-duration impulse response (IIR) filter in the RSSI path (,) so that the IIR filter (,) with dynamic coefficient scaling can be time-shared between the RSSI path (,) and the power control data path (,).

A RAKE receiver (112) includes a plurality of fingers (122, 124, 126, 128). Each finger includes a demodulator (402) for demodulating a ray of a multipath signal and a time tracking circuit (404) for controlling the time position of the finger in accordance with time position of the ray. A low delay-spread condition is detected and the positions of two adjacent fingers are controlled to prevent convergence of two or more fingers about a common time position. By maintaining finger timing separation, path diversity is exploited by the RAKE receiver even during the low delay-spread condition to improve receiver performance.

Instead, dynamic coefficient scaling is added to an infinite-duration impulse response (IIR) filter in the RSSI path (163) so that the IIR filter (250) with dynamic coefficient scaling can be time-shared between the RSSI path (163) and the power control data path (161).
