Overbased metal sulphonate detergent

A lubricating oil composition comprising oil of lubricating viscosity and an overbased metal hydrocarbyl-substituted hydroxybenzoate detergent manufactured in the presence of an amine- or ester-based friction modifier.

A method of improving the compatibility of an overbased detergent with other additives in a lubricating oil composition. The method includes the step of adding an oil-soluble, hydrocarbyl sulphonic acid to the detergent.

An overbased metal detergent having friction-modifying properties comprises colloidal inorganic base particles stably dispersed in an oil of lubricating viscosity. The colloidal particles constitute from 15 to 40 mass % of the detergent, and a stabilizing system constitutes from 20 to 45 mass % thereof, the balance being the oil of lubricating viscosity. The stabilizing system is the mixture obtained by combining an oil-soluble detergent component and from 25 to 75 mass % of an aliphatic amide having from 10 to 30 carbon atoms.

Overbased metal detergents

Sulphonates are prepared by the neutralisation of a sulphonic acid with a basic hydroxide or oxide. The process requires the staged addition of sulphonic acid to a reaction mixture comprising basic hydroxide or oxide dispersed in a water/diluent mixture; the reaction mixture is basic throughout the additions of acid and at least until the point of completion of the neutralisation reaction. The basic hydroxide or oxide may also be added in stages. The sulphonate product has low viscosity, low haze and good stability and is essentially chloride free as halide promoters are not utilised in the manufacture of the product.

Digital data networks (such as the ISDN) which provide transmission between selected locations may use time multiplexed slots with predetermined maximum bit-rates. However local area networks (LANs) transmit packets, containing data bits, at a rate which varies frequently and often corresponds to a higher bit-rate than can be handled by individual slots. In the present invention packets arriving at an input port are allocated to a number of queues each for a respective destination, and each queue is allocated a group of slots on a digital data network. The slot contents are assembled into frames in a buffer store and transmitted to the digital network. On reception, the contents of several frames of incoming multiplexed slots are held in a frame store and then assembled into packets in a number of buffers making allowance for arrival in a different slot order and different frames. Marker signals are sent periodically in each slot and these signals are used to specify the order in which the slots were transmitted and to signal when the number of slots in each group is to change to allow for variations in packet traffic.
