A system and method are provided for determining a nearest network resource using GPS coordinates. A GPS enabled computer device may obtain its location by requesting its GPS location. A list of network servers storing the desired data may be obtained by the computer system and the distance between each of the servers and the computer device may be calculated. The system then connects to the resource having the shortest distance without requiring a user to know and decide which server is closest to their location.

System and method for determining a nearest network resource using GPS coordinates

In a computing system environment for administratively installing MSI applications on one or more computing devices of a remote user, methods and apparatus include creating a temporary administrative user on the computing devices. Upon installation, the temporary administrative user is removed and the application is used normally. Preceding installation, however, determinations are made regarding whether the MSI application requires the presence of the user. If so, creation of the temporary administrative user occurs on the fly by software, indicated by way of an administrator of the environment on a computing device other than the one being installed with the application. In this manner, MSI applications, which oftentimes require the presence of an actual user, can be successfully installed without their presence. They can also be installed without the security risks of a generic user common to all computing device or installed immediately without waiting for a first user to log on.

Dynamic creation of a temporary administrative user

To display content in a user's preferred language, a content provider locates a layout information file to determine how to display the content. A layout strings file storing a layout string in a specific language is selected, according to the user's preferred languages. The content from a content provider and the layout string are then formatted as specified by the layout information file, and presented to the user.

Method and apparatus to dynamically provide web content resources in a portal

To display content controlled by a portal outside of the portal itself, a user is authenticated to the portal and then permission to access the content authorized. After authentication and authorization, the requested content is returned to the requesting program. The content is returned in the user's preferred language, a using a layout information file to determine how to display the content. A layout strings file storing a layout string in a specific language is also selected, according to the user's preferred languages. The content from a content provider and the layout string are then formatted as specified by the layout information file, and presented to the user or the requesting program.

Method and apparatus for controlling access to portal content from outside the portal

A portal server requests a gadget from a gadget server. The gadget server makes a copy of the gadget. The gadget server accesses a value to be assigned to a variable for the portal server. The value can be received as part of the request for the gadget, or can be stored on the gadget server, associated with the portal server. Assuming that a policy permits the variable to be assigned the value, any previous value assigned to the variable is overridden. The copy of the gadget is then delivered to the portal server.

Method and apparatus for dynamically delivering a gadget

Membership in a group is defined, either manually or by rule. Items are distributed to the members of the group as the items are associated with the group. When a container hierarchy changes (by adding, removing, or changing the properties of an object), the object is checked to see if the change affects the group. If so, then items are re-distributed and/or recalled from the affected members of the group.

A portal system identifies a language in which content can be displayed to the user. Possible languages can be determined from one or more of identity information for the user, a container for the user's directory entry, and the user's location. The determined languages can be ranked, and the highest-ranked available language can be selected for content display to the user.
