A system for providing the timing alignment for a scanner. The system includes a removable source and detector assembly which is placed near the center of the scanner when in use. The source includes a long-lived positron emitting radioactive source. The radioactive source is in close contact with a fast plastic scintillator or other mechanism of detecting the ionization due to positron decay. A method for reading out the precise time at which the surrounding medium detects the ionization due to positron decay. A mechanism for using this time as a reference clock unto which the detectors in the scanner can be aligned.

Removable shielding for use during neurological examinations on a whole body pet scanner

The present invention is an apparatus for examining a body part of a patient. The apparatus is comprised of a first detector module for detecting radiotracer emissions from the body part and a second detector module for detecting radiotracer emissions from the body part. The first and second detector modules are disposed adjacent to each other with the body part disposed therebetween. The apparatus also comprises means for backprojecting detected coincident events with respect to the first and second detector modules onto a plurality of imaging planes between the first and second detecting modules. Preferably, the backprojecting means comprises means for defining a line between a point on the first sensor array and a point on the second sensor array associated with a coincident event and means for determining the intersection of the line with each imaging plane. Preferably, the apparatus also comprises means for determining the distance and angle between the first detector module and the second detector module.

Dedicated apparatus and method for emission mammography

Arrays of scintillation crystals disposed on the circumference of a cylinder are used to detect the annihilation photons emitted after positron decay of isotopes within a body section. At the point of equi-probable depth of gamma ray interaction the surface treatment of each crystal is modified to absorb the light which otherwise would have been reflected by a small length of that surface. While light emitted from the rear of the crystal is nearly constant with depth, light emitted from the top front of the crystal is much reduced if the gamma ray interacts behind the absorbing band. When readout devices measure the light emitted from the top-front and rear face simultaneously it is possible to detect the region of interaction. This can be used to improve the spatial resolution of a positron imaging system.

Means for measuring the depth interaction of gamma-rays in scintillation

A circular array of detectors is used for detecting coincident events and the point of annihilation in a positron annihilation process in a selected plane wherein the output from the detectors is processed in a computer to provide image reconstruction for the selected plane. Bismuth germanate is shown to be more efficient than previously used detectors and the adaption of trapezoidal shape for the detectors enables more efficient utilization of the photons produced in the process. The use of absorbing metal reducing plugs between adjacent detectors may be used to decrease the aperture function of the detectors for low angles of incident radiation.

Detector shape and arrangement for positron annihilation imaging device

Apparatus for determining the instantaneous occurrence of coincident pulsed signals within a selected sampling time, which apparatus stores the coincident events and which provides the required algorithmic transformation necessary to determine coincident event distribution and an interface for the utilization of a general purpose computer.

A positron annihilation imaging device having two circular arrays of detectors disposed in spaced apart parallel planes wherein axially movable annular collimator rings are generally disposed in a pair of opposite planes outside the associated planes of the collimators to each collimator being movable toward the opposite collimator and a central collimator of annular configuration generally disposed between the two rows of detectors but being split into two rings which may be separated, the outer and inner collimators serving to enhance data readout and imaging.
