An outboard marine propulsion device comprises an internal combustion engine having a cylinder head and a cylinder block and an exhaust manifold that discharges exhaust gases from the engine towards a vertically elongated exhaust tube. The exhaust manifold has a plurality of inlet runners that receive the exhaust gases from the engine, and a vertically extending collecting passage that conveys the exhaust gases from the plurality of inlet runners upwardly to a bend that redirects the exhaust gases downwardly towards the exhaust tube. A cooling water jacket is on the exhaust manifold and conveys cooling water alongside the exhaust manifold. A catalyst housing is coupled to the exhaust manifold and a cooling water jacket is on the catalyst housing and carries cooling water alongside the catalyst housing. A catalyst is disposed in the catalyst housing.

A cooling system for a marine engine is provided with various cooling channels and passages which allow the rates of flow of its internal streams of water to be preselected so that heat can be advantageously removed at varying rates for different portions of the engine. In addition, the direction of flow of cooling water through the various passages assists in the removal of heat from different portions of the engine at different rates so that overheating can be avoided in certain areas, such as the exhaust manifold and cylinder head, while overcooling is avoided in other areas, such as the engine block.

A cooling system for a marine engine is provided with various cooling channels which allow the advantageous removal of heat at different rates from different portions of the engine. A split flow of water is conducted through the cylinder head, in opposite directions, to individually cool the exhaust port and intake ports at different rates. This increases the velocity of coolant flow in the downward direction through the cylinder head to avoid the accumulation of air bubbles and the formation of air pockets that could otherwise cause hot spots within the cylinder head. A parallel coolant path is provided so that a certain quantity of water can bypass the engine block and avoid overcooling the cylinder walls.

An oil temperature moderating system of an outboard motor causes cooling water to be warmed to a predefined magnitude of temperature and then conducted through a temperature responsive valve to a coolant conduit, or coolant jacket, in thermal communication with oil within an oil sump of the outboard motor. In this way, the oil within the oil sump is continuously disposed in thermal communication with cooling water that has achieved a temperature controlled by a thermostat or similar device and, as a result, is above the temperature of the water drawn from a body of water in which the outboard motor is operated. This type of system reduces the temperature of oil in the oil sump when it is greater than the cooling water flowing through the thermostat and raises the temperature of oil in the oil sump when it is cooler than water flowing through the thermostat.

A cooling system for a marine propulsion device incorporates both a closed portion and an open portion. The closed portion is operated to encourage nucleate boiling and is provided with a pump and a valve in order to regulate the rate of flow of coolant through certain heat emitting regions of the engine. The pump can be an electric variable speed pump and the valve can be used to direct coolant through a heat exchanger or to bypass the coolant around the heat exchanger.

A cooling system for a marine engine divides a flow of cooling water into first and second streams downstream of a pump. The first stream flows through a first cooling system which is controlled by a pressure sensitive valve. A fuel injector uses two or more individual piezoelectric devices. A first piezoelectric device is used to actuate a valve which allows pressurized fuel to pass from a pressure chamber through an outlet port. The fuel is pressurized by a second piezoelectric device. In certain applications, a return piezoelectric device is arranged in opposing configuration to the first piezoelectric device so that the valve can be positively moved both into its opened and closed positions rather than depending on the return force of a spring.

A telltale mechanism is provided with a valve that allows it to perform a dual function of providing a visual indicator of the operation of the cooling system of an engine and relieving water pressure within the cooling jacket of the engine. The valve provides a first fluid path through which a telltale stream is intended to flow and a second fluid path through which a pressure relief water stream is allowed to flow to maintain the pressure within the water jacket of an engine to a magnitude below a predetermined threshold.
