Systems and methods for expanding the field-of-view of ophthalmic scanning devices are presented. An ophthalmic scanning device is designed such that the pivot point of the scanning optics is maintained at a fixed location in the pupil while the scanning optics are rotated about the eye to obtain imaging data over an increased field-of-view than can be achieved by the scanning optics alone. The rotation can be achieved using a singular rotational motion of the scanning optics about a rotational axes coincident with the scanning pivot point or can be achieved using a combination of rotational motion with a second motion either rotational or translational to maintain the scanning pivot point at the fixed location. Embodiments related to optical coherence tomography and scanning laser ophthalmoscopy are described.

Ultra wide-field optical coherence tomography

Systems and methods for providing variable refractive correction in a visual field testing device are presented. One embodiment of the variable refractive correction involves two or more aligned transmissive plates arranged to produce changes in refractive power by translation or rotation of the plates relative to each other. Several alternative designs for providing variable refractive correction are described. The refractive correction can be set manually or automatically based on knowledge of the refractive error of a specific patient and spherical and cylindrical refractive correction are possible. Additional lens systems can be used to extend the range of refractive correction to accommodate a larger patient population.

Systems and methods for refractive correction in visual field testing

One embodiment of the present invention is a visual field tester that includes: (a) a projection screen; (b) a stimulus projection system that projects a light stimulus onto a first side of the projection screen; and (c) a background projection system that projects background light onto the first side of the projection screen; wherein the stimulus projection system includes: (i) a first rotatable disk having an aperture; (ii) a second rotatable disk disposed in the aperture; and (iii) a stimulus radiation projector that includes a stimulus radiation source and a radiation projection lens system that are configured to project the stimulus from the second disk onto the first side of the projection screen.

Back projection visual field tester

One embodiment of the present invention is a visual field tester that includes: (a) a projection screen; (b) a stimulus projection system that projects a light stimulus onto a first side of the projection screen; (c) a background projection system that projects a background light onto the first side of the projection screen; and (d) a lens system disposed on a second side of the projection screen that directs light transmitted through the projection screen to a predetermined location.

Method and apparatus is disclosed for mapping a corneal contour and thickness profile. In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, a set of narrow, collimated, parallel beams is projected onto a corneal surface at an angle with respect to a predetermined axis (&ldquo;an instrument axis&rdquo;) that is substantially aligned with a visual axis of an eye. The set of beams is rotated about the instrument axis. A CCD camera is disposed to view the cornea along the instrument axis. Traces of the rotating set of beams form a set of rings in images obtained by the CCD camera; wherein outer and inner edges of the rings correspond to intersections of the set of beams with anterior and posterior surfaces of the cornea, respectively. Next, a direct triangulation algorithm is used to determine spatial positions of data points along the outer edges of the rings, and these spatial positions are used to reconstruct the anterior surface profile of the cornea. Next, using the anterior surface profile of the cornea, a ray tracing triangulation algorithm is used to determine spatial positions of data points along the inner edges of the rings, and these spatial positions are used to reconstruct the posterior surface profile of the cornea. Finally, spatial differences between the posterior and anterior surface profiles of the cornea provide the thickness profile.
