A system and methods are provided for reducing the size of a message sent from a first computing device to a second computing device. The type of a data value of a message may be altered for transmission; the second computer recognizes a special data type assigned to the data value and restores the original data type. Also, data values may be buffered, and identifiers (e.g., buffer indexes) sent in their place. Both devices maintain similar buffers and the second device uses the identifier to retrieve the data value. Further, the contents of a new message may be described by how they differ from the contents of a previous message. A delta message is generated to describe the differences and identify the previous message. Upon receipt of the delta message, the second computer retrieves the previous message and uses it and the delta message to reconstruct the new message.

System and method for reducing network traffic between two computing devices

A method and apparatus are provided for extending the behavior and attributes of applications designed using a fourth generation language (4GL) programming tool. Specifically, a 4GL programming tool is provided that allows application designers to specify the implementation classes of the components that are used in the applications that they design using the 4GL programming tool. The implementation classes thus specified may define attributes and behaviors not supported by the corresponding component implementations provided with the 4GL programming tool. During runtime, methods in the specified implementation classes are invoked. To correctly invoke the methods of user-specified implementation classes, the interfaces of the methods must be known to the entity performing the invocations. Therefore, according to one aspect of the invention, all component implementations that are to be used by the application, including both the &ldquo;standard&rdquo; component implementations provided with the 4GL programming tool and the &ldquo;custom&rdquo; component implementations specified by the application designer, implement a common interface.
