Polar modifier systems based on a blend of DTHFP, ETE, TMEDA, DMTHFMA and/or functionally similar compounds with BDMAEE and SMT are used to make block copolymers having high levels of pendant vinyl double bond repeat units, which is through highly selective 1,2-bond butadiene addition, low vinylcyclopentane formation, unimodal narrow molecular weight distribution, and a low level of randomized co-monomer repeat units. The block copolymers have very high levels of 1,2-vinyl content and high 3,4-vinyl bond addition of the conjugated diene monomer and low vinylcyclopentane content. The polar modifier systems provide a fast polymerization rate, with a unimodal narrow molecular weight distribution. The polar modifier systems allow operation at a higher temperature than in prior art systems, which reduces cooling requirements.

The present invention provides a process for making a silica masterbatch that contains hydrophobated silica, solution-made rubber and emulsion-made rubber. Hydrophobated silica is mixed into a latex emulsion. Solution-rubber crumb in an aqueous suspension is mixed into the latex emulsion, which is coagulated, and a crumb is recovered, further homogenized, dried and baled to yield the silica masterbatch. A well-dispersed mixture of hydrophobated silica and emulsion-made rubber is added into a steam distillation step of a solution-rubber process from which a silica masterbatch is recovered. The emulsion-made rubber can be omitted to make a silica masterbatch of solution rubber and silica without emulsion rubber. The silica masterbatch has physical properties similar to those found in a comparable dry-mixed composition, but the silica masterbatch can be incorporated more easily and less expensively into tires and other rubber products than the dry-mixed composition.

A process is provided for making a silica masterbatch, that contains silica and solution-made rubber. The silica masterbatch has physical properties similar to those found in a comparable dry-mixed composition, but the silica masterbatch can be incorporated more easily and less expensively into tires and other rubber products than the dry-mixed composition. A process is also provided for making a masterbatch of silica, a solution-made rubber and an emulsion-made rubber.

Processes for making masterbatches of rubber and silica

The present invention provides a process for making silica-filled rubber masterbatch using silica hydrophobated with a trimethoxy silane coupling agent that is soluble in an alcohol-water solution containing at least about 70 wt % water. One embodiment uses a mixture of trimethoxy silanes, one or more of which react with rubber to bond the silica to the rubber, and one or more of which do not react with rubber, but do hydrophobate the silica. Hydrophobated silica is mixed with latex polymer and incorporated into rubber during coagulation of the latex, which is preferably coagulated with calcium chloride. The present invention further provides a process for making the trimethoxy silane coupling agents. Preferred trimethoxy silane coupling agents include bis-(3-trimethoxysilylpropyl)-disulfide and bis-(3-trimethoxysilylpropyl)-tetrasulfide. Rubber products, particularly tires, compounded with the inventive silica masterbatch can be processed for a long time before scorching because the silica masterbatch provides a long scorch time.

Disclosed is a process for the making a polyvinylchloride/acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber blend by a) coating a polyvinylchloride resin with a stabilizer to form a precoated PVC; b) blending said precoated PVC with one or more acrylonitrile-butadiene rubbers to form a prestabilized NBR/PVC blend; and c) applying heat and pressure to intimately blend said prestabilized NBR/PVC blend into a fluxed NBR/PVC blend. Another aspect is a novel polyvinylchloride/acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber blend having a stabilizer homogeneously and uniformly distributed throughout the microscopic polyvinylchloride domains.

Corrosion inhibiting multilayer coating

A corrosion inhibiting composition is provided. The composition comprises an intrinsically conductive polymer, e.g. polyaniline or polypyrrole, blended in a binder material, preferably a non-thermoplastic matrix, the blend being capable of adhering to a metal surface to provide enhanced corrosion resistance to the metal. The blend provides corrosion resistance in a variety of corrosive environments such as acidic, alkaline, and salt environments. A method for protecting metal surfaces from corrosive attack by applying the corrosion inhibiting composition is provided, as well as two component corrosion inhibiting coatings, corrosion inhibited thin films of metal adhered to an intrinsically conducting polymer containing substrate, and corrosion inhibited metal bilayers.

Cyclic olefin metathesis polymerization catalyst comprising metal compounds wherein said metals consist essentially of a minor amount of a transition metal which Will initiate ring-opening metathesis polymerization of a cyclic olefin and a major amount of at least one second metal which will propagate the polymerization, wherein said catalyst is essentially devoid of pyrophoric metal compounds, e.g. metal alkyls, and preformed metal carbenes. A preferred transition metal is ruthenium. Said second metal can comprise aluminum, copper, hafnium, iron (III), iridium, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, niobium, rhenium, rhodium, tantalum, titanium, tungsten, yttrium, a Lanthanide, zinc or zirconium or a mixture thereof. Using such catalyst cyclic olefin, e.g. norbornene derivatives, can be polymerized, e.g. in an extruder, even in the presence of water.

An apparatus and a method for size exclusion chromatography is provided. The apparatus is a chromatographic column adapted for use in size exclusion chromatography by having dimensions suitable for size exclusion chromatography and by having a packing material comprising generally spherical particles having wedge-shaped macropores. Preferred particles are in the shape of lamellar and/or acicular crystals extending radially outwardly from a central core region and comprise aluminum oxide, aluminum hydroxide or a mixture thereof. The method involves passing a solution of macromolecules through a column adapted for size exclusion chromatography packed with such particles. The particles effectively and efficiently separate a wide range of macromolecules in decreasing order of their molecular weight.
