A method of improving the adhesion of metathesis compositions, such as ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) compositions, to a substrate is disclosed, in which an adhesion promoter is added to a polymerizable resin composition in order to improve the adhesion of the polymerizing resin to a substrate material. The addition of the adhesion promoter has been found to provide beneficial improvements in the adhesion of metathesis, especially ROMP, compositions to substrates, particularly glass surfaces, leading to improved characteristics in ROMP materials formed therefrom. The adhesion promoter generally comprises a functionalized silane compound and a peroxide compound. A ROMP composition is further disclosed comprising a cyclic olefin, a ROMP metathesis catalyst, and the adhesion promoter. Polymer products produced via metathesis (ROMP) reactions of the invention may be utilized to provide a wide range of materials and in a variety of composite applications. The invention has utility in the fields of catalysis, organic synthesis, and polymer and materials chemistry and manufacture.

Method and composition for improving adhesion of metathesis compositions to substrates

This invention relates to compositions and methods for improving the adhesion of resin compositions to substrate materials, pre-treating substrate materials to improve the adhesion of resin compositions to the substrate materials, and/or controlling gel formation of resin compositions. More particularly, the invention relates to compositions and methods for improving the adhesion of ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) compositions to substrate materials using adhesion promoters containing isocyanate groups in a resin composition. The invention also relates to methods for improving the adhesion of resin compositions to substrate materials by pre-treating substrate materials with adhesion promoters containing isocyanate groups. The invention further relates to a method of providing a gel-modified ROMP composition, in which a hydroperoxide is added to a ROMP polymerizable resin composition in order to control gel formation of the polymerizing resin. An improved ROMP composition is further disclosed, comprising a cyclic olefin, a ROMP metathesis catalyst, an adhesion promoter, and an added hydroperoxide gel modifier. The polymer products produced via ROMP reactions of the invention may be utilized for a wide range of materials and composite applications. The invention has utility in the fields of catalysis, organic synthesis, and polymer and materials chemistry and manufacture.

Adhesion promoters and gel-modifiers for olefin metathesis compositions

This invention relates to compositions and methods for improving the adhesion of resin compositions to substrate materials. More particularly, the invention relates to compositions and methods for improving the adhesion of ROMP compositions to substrate materials using an adhesion promoter composition, where the adhesion promoter composition comprises a pre-reacted mixture comprising at least one compound containing at least two isocyanate groups and at least one compound comprising a heteroatom-containing functional group and a metathesis active olefin, where the adhesion promoter composition is storage stable and/or possesses in-resin storage stability when added to a resin composition, particularly a cyclic olefin resin composition, such as a ROMP composition. The polymer products produced via ROMP reactions of the invention may be utilized for a wide range of materials and composite applications. The invention has utility in the fields of polymer and materials chemistry and manufacture.

Adhesion promoter compositions for cyclic olefin resin compositions

The present invention is directed to addressing one or more of the aforementioned concerns and relates to thermal insulation materials and thermal insulation material compositions and methods for thermally insulating pipelines and associated equipment, structures, and objects used in offshore drilling. The present invention is directed to articles of manufacture comprising the thermal insulation materials and/or thermal insulation material compositions of the invention. More particularly the present invention relates to the use of ring opening metathesis polymerization polymers (ROMP polymers) and/or ROMP polymer composites for thermally insulating pipelines and associated equipment, structures, and objects used in offshore oil drilling.

Thermal insulation

A method of improving the adhesion of metathesis compositions, such as ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) compositions, to a substrate is disclosed, in which an adhesion promoter is added to a polymerizable resin composition in order to improve the adhesion of the polymerizing resin to a substrate material. The addition of the adhesion promoter has been found to provide beneficial improvements in the adhesion of metathesis, especially ROMP, compositions to substrates, particularly glass surfaces, leading to improved characteristics in ROMP materials formed therefrom. The present invention relates to compositions comprising at least one cyclic olefin, at least one metal carbene olefin metathesis catalyst, and dicumyl peroxide. The present invention relates to a method of making ROMP polymers and articles of manufacture with improved resistance to hydrocarbon fluids. Particularly the invention relates to ROMP polymer compositions with improved resistance to hydrocarbon fluids. Such ROMP polymers and ROMP polymer compositions can be used in a variety of materials and composite applications.

Romp polymers having improved resistance to hydrocarbon fluids

Olefin metathesis catalyst compositions comprising at least two metal carbene olefin metathesis catalysts

Storage stable adhesion promoter compositions for cyclic olefin resin compositions

A vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) method is disclosed, the method comprising: providing a vacuum-assisted resin transfer mold assembly comprising a mold having a first mold surface and a second mold surface arranged to enclose a laminate assembly within a space between the first and second mold surfaces when the laminate assembly is placed on the first mold surface; providing a laminate assembly comprising a laminate pre-form, a peel ply, and a resin distribution media pervious to the flow of a resin, the laminate pre-form having first and second surfaces, the first surface of the pre-form positioned to be in contact with the first mold surface, the peel ply positioned such that the second surface of the laminate pre-form is in contact with the peel ply, and the resin distribution media positioned to be contained within the first and second mold surfaces; positioning at least one resin flow control structure to modify the flow of resin within the resin distribution media; providing at least one inlet and at least one outlet in the laminate assembly such that the resin can be introduced into the assembly through the inlet; arranging and sealing the second mold surface to enclose the laminate assembly within the space between the first and second mold surfaces such that a vacuum can be pulled on the laminate assembly contained within the space between the first and second mold surfaces; applying a vacuum to the mold assembly; allowing the resin to flow into the laminate assembly through the at least one inlet such that the resin flow into the resin distribution media; allowing the resin to flow out of the laminate assembly through the at least one outlet; and allowing the resin to cure in the laminate material. An article of manufacture made by said VARTM method.

VARTM flow modifications for low viscosity resin systems

There is disclosed a method and a basket for use with a golf ball range picker having a support frame. The basket may include a pair of inwardly offset handles in the basket side walls for ease of lifting when a series of two or more like baskets are arranged in a closely spaced side by side configuration. A pair of front edges of front side wall sections are each tapered outwardly toward the front to minimize or at least greatly reduce the surface area formed by abutting vertical edges with a like basket, to help guide the golf balls being thrown by the range picker into the baskets, and not deflect them inadvertently away from entering the baskets by otherwise providing thick abutting vertical edges which could block the path of travel of the golf balls. A front flange is disposed substantially along the entire length of the front of the basket for resting securely on a front portion of the support frame, and a rear flange is adapted for resting securely on a back portion of the support frame.
