Systems and methods are presented for transmitting additional data over preexisting differential COFDM signals by changing the amplitude of the legacy data symbols. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, additional data capacity can be achieved for a COFDM signal which is completely backwards compatible with existing legacy satellite broadcast communications systems. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, additional information can be overlaid on a legacy COFDM signal by applying an amplitude offset to the legacy symbols. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, special receiver processing can be implemented to extract this additional information, which can include performing channel equalization across frequency bins to isolate the amplitude modulated overlay signal. For example, at each FFT symbol time, average power across neighboring active data bins can be used to determine the localized power at the corresponding FFT bins, and a channel inversion can then, for example, be performed on the data bins to restore, as best as possible, the original transmitted symbol amplitude.

Overlay modulation technique for COFDM signals based on amplitude offsets

Systems and methods are presented for transmitting additional data over preexisting differential COFDM signals by modulating existing data carriers with a phase and an amplitude offset. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, additional data capacity can be achieved for an COFDM signal which is completely backwards compatible with existing satellite broadcast communications systems. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention additional information can be overlayed on an existing signal as a combination of amplitude and phase offset from the original QPSK symbols, applied for each information bit of the overlay data. With two additional levels of modulation, a receiver can demodulate the information from each of the previous stages and combine the information into a suitable format for soft decoding. The first stage of demodulation will be recovery of overlay data from the amplitude modulated D8PSK. Because other amplitude variations due to multi-path are also expected, the data gathered from the FFT in the receiver must be equalized to the channel conditions. After channel equalization has been performed, soft overlay data can then be derived from the distance off the unit circle. In order to recover the phase modulated overlay data, the equalized symbols must first be differentially demodulated and corrected for any common phase error offset. After common phase removal, overlay phase information can be obtained.

Overlay modulation of COFDM using phase and amplitude offset carriers

Systems and methods are presented for improving the ability to withstand slow speed mute via diversity transmission while avoiding loss in link level margin. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, systems and methods are presented for improving resistance to slow speed muting by employing transmit diversity where a second signal is not a replica of the original signal. The second signal can be generated, for example, by using only a COFDM FFT bin that contained the cluster sync bit while setting all other bins to zero. That is, only the spectral portion of interest of the COFDM signal need be utilized. In such exemplary embodiments, the same frequency and time delay offset can be used as in current systems and methods, except that the replica COFDM signal can, for example, consist of only one populated FFT bin.

Slow speed mute resistance via selective COFDM bin loading

Systems and methods are presented for digital antenna diversity combining. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, at least two antenna signal paths can be communicably connected to a receiver. Each antenna signal path can be provided with an RF tuner communicably connected to a demodulator, which can estimate the signal to noise ratio (SNR) and time of arrival of its respective antenna signal. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, a time alignment circuit can be communicably connected to each antenna signal path, and a maximum ratio combiner can be communicably connected to the time alignment circuit. In operation, the time alignment circuit can use the time of arrival estimate to align the multiple signals and the maximum ratio combiner can use the SNR estimate obtained for each antenna signal to respectively weight each signal and thereby generate a combined output signal. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, a switch diversity combiner can be further provided, and can quickly detect when an antenna signal is entering a fade, allowing the maximum ratio combiner to set that signal's weight to zero. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, a digital diversity combiner can be provided in a stand alone integrated circuit, or can be integrated in a larger integrated circuit, such as, for example, a satellite radio overlay processor.

Systems and methods for antenna diversity combining for satellite radio signals

A single-axis receiver processes, for example, a complex vestigial sideband (VSB) modulated signal with an equalizer accounting for DC offset within the modulated signal. The DC offset embedded in a received signal may degrade the process of equalization. The equalizer includes a method of blind estimation of the DC offset for removing the DC offset. The estimate is generated by jointly minimizing a Constant Modulus (CM) cost function over equalizer parameters and a DC offset estimate. An arbitrary DC offset the CM cost function admits local spurious minima in terms of the equalizer function. If the DC offset at the receiver is equal to the DC offset inserted at the transmitter, which is equivalent to neglecting the ISI caused by the channel, then only half of the CM equalizer minima remain unchanged. Provided a power constraint on the signal space is satisfied, the DC offset estimate, computed with a joint optimization of the CM cost function, converges to the desired solution, and, thus, the equalizer parameters are guaranteed to converge to the desired solution.

A robust data extension, added to a standard 8VSB digital television signal, is used to improve the performance of a digital television receiver. Robust data packets are encoded at a 1/3-trellis rate as compared to normal data packets that are encoded at a 2/3-trellis rate. In addition to delivery of robust data for mobile applications, the redundant robust data packets also improve the performance of the receiver in the normal tier of service. In particular, the robust data packets improve the performance of the receiver equalizer filter in the presence of rapidly changing transient channel conditions such as dynamic multipath for both robust data packets and normal data packets. The robust data packets improve the performance of the carrier recovery loop and the symbol timing recovery loop. Backward compatibility with existing receivers is maintained for 1) 8VSB signaling, 2) trellis encoding and decoding, 3) Reed Solomon encoding and decoding, and 4) MPEG compatibility.

A method and apparatus for performing bandedge equalization. Specifically, the apparatus contains a pre-equalizer for adjusting the amplitudes of the bandedges of a broadband signal in response to a control signal. A bandedge filter is connected to the pre-equalizer and extracts a bandedge signal from the broadband signal. Lastly, a bandedge signal processor that is connected to the bandedge filter generates the control signal in response to said bandedge signal. In this manner, when the bandedges of the broadband signal are asymmetric, the apparatus adjusts the signal strength of each bandedge with respect to one another to equalize (balance) the bandedges. The balanced signal can then be used by a bandedge timing recovery circuit. As such, the accuracy of a bandedge timing recovery circuit is not impacted by the asymmetric bandedges of the input signal.

Method and apparatus for performing bandedge equalization

Carrier phase recovery employs a single-axis blind cost criterion from the Bussgang class of functions, and its stochastic gradient, to generate a carrier phase error used to adjust a received and demodulated signal to near baseband. For one implementation, the estimate is derived in accordance with a Single-Axis Constant Modulus (SA-CM) criterion and its stochastic gradient via a SA-CM algorithm (SA-CMA). The carrier phase error is then used to adjust the carrier frequency and phase of the received and demodulated signal toward the frequency and phase of the carrier used to modulate the transmitted symbols, driving the carrier phase error to zero. The values used for the phase recovery may be either i) an IIR filtered signal, ii) a processed signal (e.g., decisions for the signal symbols), or iii) an equalized and processed signal.

Carrier phase estimation based on single-axis constant modulus cost criterion and Bussgang criteria

A single-axis receiver processing, for example, complex vestigial sideband modulated signals with an equalizer with forward and feedback filters. Forward and feedback filters have parameters that are initialized and adapted to steady state operation. Adaptive equalization employs linear predictive filtering and error term generation based on various cost criteria. Adaptive equalization includes recursive update of parameters for forward and feedback filtering as operation changes between linear and decision-feedback equalization of either single or multi-channel signals. An adaptive, linear predictive filter generates real-valued parameters that are employed to set the parameters of the feedback filter. In an initialization mode, filter parameters are set via a linear prediction filter to approximate the inverse of the channel's impulse/frequency response and a constant modulus error term for adaptation of the filter parameters. In an acquisition mode, equalization is as linear equalization with a constant modulus error term, and possibly other error terms in combination, for adaptation of the filter parameters. In a tracking mode, equalization is as decision feedback equalization with decision-directed error terms for adaptation of the filter parameters. For some equalizer configurations, feedback filtering is applied to real-valued decisions corresponding to complex-valued received data, and includes real-part extraction of the error term employed for recursive update of filtering parameters. Where a training sequence is available to the receiver, initial parameters for forward filtering are estimated by correlation of the received signal with the training sequence.

Linear prediction based initialization of a single-axis blind equalizer for VSB signals

An equalizer for use in a communication receiver includes an infinite impulse response (IIR) feedback filter operated in acquisition and tracking feedback modes on a sample by sample basis to form a hybrid Decision Feedback Equalizer (DFE) architecture. In acquisition mode, soft decision samples from the filtered received signal are input to the IIR filter. In the tracking mode, hard decision samples from a slicer are input to the IIR filter. Acquisition and tracking operating modes are selected in accordance with a set of decision rules on a sample by sample basis based on the quality of the current hard decision. If the current hard decision is low quality, then the soft decision sample (acquisition mode) is used. If the current hard decision is high quality, then the hard decision sample (tracking mode) is used. In such manner, the DFE is operated in a hybrid mode, i.e., using both soft and hard decisions on a sample by sample basis. Furthermore, the decision rules that are responsive to signal reliability to select acquisition and tracking modes are adaptive.

Symbol timing recovery employs a blind cost criterion from the Bussgang class of functions, and its stochastic gradient, to generate a timing phase error used to adjust sampling of received symbols. For one implementation, the estimate is derived in accordance with the Constant Modulus (CM) criterion and its gradient via the CM algorithm (CMA), and the estimate is calculated from a sequence of samples. This estimate is then used to adjust the period and phase of the sample sequence toward the period and phase of the transmitted symbols, driving the timing phase error to zero. The values used may be either i) samples themselves, ii) processed (e.g., interpolated) samples, or iii) equalized and processed samples. In addition, timing phase error estimates for other cost criteria, including the least mean squares algorithm, may be generated. These timing phase error estimates are selected either alone or in combination for deriving the timing phase error used to adjust the period and phase of the sample sequence.

Blind cost criterion timing recovery

A multiple channel diversity receiver includes joint automatic gain control (AGC) signal processing wherein the first and second channels of the multiple channel diversity receiver share at least one joint AGC loop. The maximum difference between the AGC feedback signal in the control loop for the first channel and the AGC feedback control signal in the control loop for the second channel is limited to a selectable maximum differential. The AGC control loop with the stronger first RF signal thus limits the maximum amount that the weaker signal is amplified in the AGC control loop with the weaker second RF signal. By limiting the AGC feedback signal in the control loop of the second channel to a maximum differential with respect to the AGC feedback signal in the control loop of the first channel, the weaker signal is not overly amplified thereby avoiding the undue amplification of noise in the second channel.
