A system allows a user to obtain information about television programming and to make selections of programming using conversational speech. The system includes a speech recognizer that recognizes spoken requests for television programming information. A speech synthesizer generates spoken responses to the spoken requests for television programming information. A user may use a voice user interface as well as a graphical user interface to interact with the system to facilitate the selection of programming choices.

Providing programming information in response to spoken requests

A system allows a user to obtain information and to make selections using conversational speech. The system includes a speech recognizer that recognizes spoken requests for television programming information. A speech synthesizer may generate spoken responses to the spoken requests for information. A user may use a voice user interface as well as a graphical user interface to interact with the system to facilitate selections.

Providing information in response to spoken requests

A system allows a user to use spoken commands to select a position in an audio/visual program. The program may be identified by a file associated with a stored portion of a program that includes a field that identifies positions in the program. When the user requests a position, the user's speech is recognized to produce information that may be compared to the information in the field to locate the position selected by the user.

Using speech to select a position in a program

A system allows a user to use conversational commands to control the recording of video programming. In some embodiments of the present invention, these natural language commands may be also utilized to manage a video library or to manage a schedule for video recordings. The video recording device may be an analog or digital system.
