Disclosed are various embodiments for a local networked storage that is linked to a remote networked storage system. In one embodiment, among others, a computing device obtains a request to read a file stored in a remote networked storage system in association with a user account, in which the request is obtained from a client computing device through a local network. The computing device also determines that the file is stored in a local cache and receives the latest file signature associated with the file from the remote networked storage system. The computing device can determine that the latest file signature corresponds to a file signature of the file stored in the local cache and can determine that the file stored in the local cache corresponds to the latest version of the file. The file can be sent through the local network.

A device may participate in a shared data state in which editing operations performed locally are distributed and synchronized with other devices participating in the shared data state. Data may be maintained in log-structured storage files on each device. Changes made locally may be conditionally appended to log-structured storage and committed or rolled back during synchronization. Devices may exchange sets of related change descriptors preceded by associated contextual information. Conflicts may be resolved through application of conflict resolution rules or through a user-involved process. User notification of conflict resolution may be based on user intent inferred from contextual information and associated change descriptors.

Architectures and techniques are described to provide personal remote storage space for electronic content items acquired (e.g., purchased) by a user of a client device. In some cases, as part of a transaction to acquire the electronic content item, an individual may receive an option that is selectable to indicate a preference to send electronic content items acquired by the individual to a personal remote storage space of the individual. When the option to store the electronic content item in the personal remote storage space is not selected by the individual, the electronic content item may be provided directly to a designated computing device of the individual.

Disclosed are various embodiments for a local networked storage that is linked to a remote networked storage system. In one embodiment, among others, a computing device obtains a request from a client device to read a file stored in a remote networked storage system. The computing device determines whether the file is stored in a local cache. The file is sent to the client device through a local network when the file is stored in the local cache. The computing device obtains the file from the remote networked storage system when the file is not stored in the local cache, where an indication of a user account is provided to the remote networked storage system. The file is sent to the client device in response to the file being obtained from the remote networked storage system.

Disclosed are various embodiments for local networked storage that is linked to a remote networked storage system. In a client application, it is determined whether a local networked storage system is accessible to the client through a local network. A file is sent to the local networked storage system over the local network for storage by the local networked storage system when the local networked storage system is determined to be accessible to the client through the local network. A file is sent to a remote networked storage system over a remote network for storage by the remote networked storage system in association with a user account when the local networked storage system is determined not to be accessible through the local network.

Selection information corresponding to a particular media item is received via the user interface. The media item is requested and received from another computing device. Consumption data is collected during consumption of the media item. The consumption data is sent to another computing device.

For example, a broadcast media item is stored in a networked storage system in association with an account of a user for later consumption. At least one marker is located in the broadcast media item that identifies a first advertisement in the broadcast media item. One of a plurality of second advertisements is selected that targets the user to replace the first advertisement. The first advertisement is replaced with the selected one of the second advertisements in the broadcast media item.

A determination can be whether the storage location is associated with a third party system. An authentication credential can be retrieved that is associated with the third party system. A selected media title and associated metadata is stored in a user-specific media storage area. The selection of a media title is based at least in part on user-specific consumption data. Consumption data for the requested media title is received from the client.

Disclosed are various embodiments that provide file system merchandising. A file service maintains file systems associated with file service accounts. When accessing content of the file system through a network page, the network page includes a merchandising recommendation that is based at least in part upon characteristic information associated with the requested content. The merchandising recommendation may also be based at least in part upon account behavior history associated with the file service account. A link may be included in the merchandising recommendation to initiate previewing of at least a portion of a recommended item and/or to initiate acquisition of the recommended item.
