The three dimensional device is adapted to be inserted into a portion of a vasculature for occluding the portion of the vasculature for use in interventional therapy and vascular surgery. The device is formed from a multi-stranded microcable having a plurality of flexible strands of a shape memory material and at least one radiopaque strand. The flexible strands in a multi-stranded micro-cable of the device can be helically wound, or can be configured as parallel, longitudinal strands, and can also be formed to have a secondary, three dimensional therapeutic configuration, such as helical, conical, spherical, or other geometric shapes. The strands can be made of a shape memory nickel titanium alloy, that is highly flexible at a temperature appropriate for introduction into the body via a catheter, and that after placement will take on the therapeutic shape. The device can also include a therapeutic agent, and can be bundled by an outer cover to constrain the strands of the micro-cable about a longitudinal axis to produce a composite banded cable.

The hydrogel for the treatment of aneurysms acts as a carrier for both a radiopaque agent allowing the hydrogel to be visualized under fluoroscopy and a therapeutic agent such as one or more human growth factors. The hydrogel is delivered through a catheter into the aneurysm, where the hydrogel becomes more viscous upon reaching body temperature, or upon exposure to bodily fluids, to block blood flow into the aneurysm. In addition to stopping blood flow into the aneurysm, the delivery of human growth factors to the aneurysm site promotes the growth of a cellular layer across the neck of the aneurysm. The hydrogel may be of a type that dissolves over time or one which remains as a permanent occlusive agent within the aneurysm.

Hydrogel for the therapeutic treatment of aneurysms

This is a device for bridging the neck of either a wide-necked or narrow-necked aneurysm in the vasculature. In general, it is a device used to stabilize the presence of vaso-occlusive devices (such as helically wound coils) in the aneurysm. The device preferably is delivered by a core wire which terminates in an electrolytically severable joint. The core wire will often be insulated. The retainer assembly itself is also attached to the electrolytic joint and typically has a number of array elements which are intended to be resident within the aneurysm after the device is deployed from the distal end of a catheter. After deployment of this retainer, the aneurysm is at least partially filled with a vaso-occlusive device such as helically wound coils.

Detachable aneurysm neck bridge (III)

This is an implantable vaso-occlusive device. It is a complex, helically wound coil having multiple secondary layers of primary windings. The final shape is often chunky in nature and may be used in the approximate shape of an anatomical cavity. It may be deployed in the approximate shape of a sphere, an ovoid, or other distorted spherical shape. The device is a self-forming shape made from a pre-formed linear vaso-occlusion member. Fibers may be introduced onto the device and affixed to the pre-formed linear member. The constituent member may be also be covered with a fibrous braid. The device is typically introduced through a catheter. The device is passed axially through the catheter sheath and assumes its form upon exiting the catheter without further action. The invention also includes methods of winding the anatomically shaped vaso-occlusive device into appropriately shaped forms and annealing them to form various devices.

Multiple layered vaso-occlusive coils

This is an implantable vaso-occlusive device. It is typically a vaso-occlusive coil comprising a primary helically wound coil which may then be wound into a secondary shape. Central to the invention is the use of a stretch-resisting member extending through the lumen formed, which stretch-resisting member is fixedly attached, directly or indirectly, to the coil in at least two locations. The stretch-resisting member is preferably somewhat loose within the interior of the lumen so to prevent the coil from collapsing, binding, and therefore stiffening during passage of turns through the human body. The coil should bend easily. In some variations of the invention, the stretch-resisting member may be formed into coil tips at the ends of the coil using simple equipment such as soldering irons or the like. The tips are typically of the same diameter as is the coil body itself. This stretch-resisting member is for the primary purpose of preventing stretching of the coil during movement of that coil, e.g., by retrieval or repositioning after deployment. The device may have a self-forming secondary shape made from a pre-formed primary linear helically wound coil, although it need not have the secondary form. Desirably, the coil is extremely flexible and is controllaby released using a severable or mechanical joint such as an electrolytically detachable joint. External fibers may be attached to the device and affixed to the pre-formed linear member to increase thrombogenicity. The extremely flexible variation of the invention may be hydraulically delivered through the lumen of a catheter and is so flexible that it may be retrievably delivered therethrough a flow-directed catheter. The vaso-occlusive member may be also be covered with a fibrous braid. The device is typically introduced into the body through a catheter. The device is passed axially through the catheter sheath and assumes its secondary form upon exiting the catheter.

Stretch resistant vaso-occlusive coils (II)

This is an implantable vaso-occlusive device. It is typically a vaso-occlusive coil comprised of a primary helically wound coil which may then be wound into a secondary shape. Central to the invention is the use of a stretch-resisting member fixedly attached within at least a portion of the primary coil. The stretch-resisting member may be formed into coil tips at the ends of the coil by melting the polymeric fibers or alloys or by attaching the fibers with a glue. This stretch-resisting member is for the primary purpose of preventing stretching of the coil during movement of that coil, e.g., by retrieval or repositioning after deployment. The device typically has a self-forming secondary shape made from a pre-formed primary linear helically wound coil, although it need not have the secondary form. External fibers may be attached to the device and affixed to the pre-formed linear member to increase . The vaso-occlusive member may be also be covered with a fibrous braid. The device is typically introduced into the body through a catheter. The device is passed axially through the catheter sheath and assumes its secondary form upon exiting the catheter.

This invention is an implantable vaso-occlusive device. It is a helically wound coil having a central section along its longitudinal axis which is somewhat stiffer than at least one of its end regions.

Variable stiffness coils

This is an implantable vasoocclusive device. It is constructed of a primary helically wound coil, which primary coil is further wound into secondary shapes which are at least partially substantially conical. Other portions of the secondary shape may have sections of constant diameter or of other conical shapes. The primary coil may be made in such a way that it has regions of differing flexibility. Fibrous materials may be placed on the coils in tufted, streamer, or woven configurations so to increase the thrombogenicity of the overall assembled device.

Variable cross-section conical vasoocclusive coils

This is a surgical device that, in particular, is for forming a vasoocclusion or embolism. Typically, it is a helically wound coil in which the helix is wound in such a way as to have multiple axially offset, longitudinal or focal axes. Another important facet of the invention is the presence of small diameter secondary coil windings adjacent large diameter coil windings. The device is sufficiently flexible and small that it may be delivered to a site within the vasculature of the human body using a pusher and a catheter. The device is generally linear when within the catheter but relaxes to form the multi-focal form after delivery from the distal end of the catheter lumen. Various mechanical connections may also be used to discharge the inventive coil from its pusher. Similarly, the coil may be attached to a pusher using a sacrificial joint, which sacrificial joint is dissolved by imposition of a small voltage within the human body. The device may be used alone or in conjunction with other coils or with a fibrous thrombotic attachments or the substrate to localize subsequent infusion of tissue adhesives, other particulate embolization devices, or chemotherapeutic agents in abnormal blood vessels and tissues.
