Provided herein are systems methods including a design of a microscope slide scanner for digital pathology applications which provides high quality images and automated batch-mode operation at low cost. The instrument architecture is advantageously based on a convergence of high performance, yet low cost, computing technologies, interfaces and software standards to enable high quality digital microscopy at very low cost. Also provided is a method based in part on a stitching method that allows for dividing an image into a number of overlapping tiles and reconstituting the image with a magnification without substantial loss of accuracy. A scanner is employed in capturing snapshot images. The method allows for overlapping images captured in consecutive snapshots.

A disposable cuvette cartridge for optical measurements is formed from three flexible thin layers. The middle layer is an adhesive sheet with cut out regions, typically between 30 and 50, serving as optical chambers bounded by the two outer layers. Inlet and vent holes in one of the outer sheets provide access to the optical chambers. At least one of the outer sheets is made of a material having low fluorescence, such as a cyclo-olefin copolymer. With its low background fluorescence, the cuvette cartridge is useful for high-throughput fluorescence measurements of biological samples.

A laser capture microdissection method includes: providing a sample that is to undergo laser capture microdissection; positioning the sample within an optical axis of a laser capture microdissection instrument; providing a transfer film carrier removably positioned in a transfer film carrier handling subsystem, the transfer film carrier having a substrate surface and a laser capture microdissection transfer film coupled to the substrate surface; and then placing the laser capture microdissection transfer film in juxtaposition with the sample by moving the transfer film carrier handling subsystem, the laser capture microdissection transfer film being placed in juxtaposition with a pressure sufficient to allow laser capture microdissection transfer of a portion of the sample to the laser capture microdissection transfer film, without forcing nonspecific transfer of a remainder of the sample to the laser capture microdisection film; and then transferring a portion of the sample to the laser capture microdissection transfer film, without forcing nonspecific transfer of a remainder of the sample to the laser capture microdissection transfer film. Transferring includes moving the laser capture microdissection transfer film and the portion of the sample away from the remainder of the sample with the transfer film carrier handling subsystem. The transfer film carrier handling subsystem can be mounted on an inverted microscope. The systems and methods provide the advantages of increased speed and much lower rates of contamination
