A system for electrically connecting first and second electronic devices wherein the devices are movable relative to each other. The system includes an electric cable having end segments and a medial segment therebetween wherein each of the end segments connects to one of the first and second electronic devices. A tensioning mechanism maintains a tensile load on the medial segment of the electric cable while a guide mechanism directs movement of the electric cable in response to relative motion between the first and second electronic devices. Moreover, a strain relief mechanism is operative to mitigate the transmission of tensile loads from the medial segment to either of the end segments such that the end segments are substantially unloaded in response to movement of the devices.

Low-cost cable connecting system for movable/separable electronic devices

A document registration apparatus for use with a conveying device for transporting a document along a path from an upstream position to a downstream position through a document registration position, the document registration apparatus including an urge roller positioned adjacent to the path, the urge roller being moveable between a first urge roller position contacting the document and a second urge roller position out of contact with the document; apparatus for biasing the urge roller toward the conveying device; and a registration stop positioned adjacent to the urge roller and the path, the registration stop being moveable between a first registration stop position where the registration stop blocks transport of the document along the path and a second registration stop position away from the path where the registration stop does not block transport of the document along the path; wherein at times when the urge roller is in the first urge roller position and the registration stop is in the first registration stop position the biasing apparatus biases the urge roller against the document by a first force thereby urging the document against the conveying device due to the first force so that the document is moved to, aligned against, and stopped by the registration stop at the document registration position.

Document registration apparatus with improved document drive capability

An envelope throat opening mechanism for an envelope inserting machine includes a pair of envelope throat opening claw assemblies mounted adjacent an envelope inserting position for opening the outer ends of an envelope disposed in the envelope inserting position to permit insert material to be inserted into the envelope. An envelope throat opening tongue assembly is also disposed adjacent the envelope inserting position and in substantial alignment with the center of an envelope, the tongue assembly having a tongue mounted therein for movement into the throat of the envelope adjacent the center thereof to ensure that the center portion of the throat is opened sufficiently to permit the insert material to be inserted into the envelope. There is means for driving the claw assemblies and the tongue assembly in a timed sequence with the arrival of an envelope at the inserting position, and with the claw assemblies operating asynchronously with respect to the mounting means for the tongue to move the claws into the throat of the envelope in advance of the tongue entering the throat, so that both the outer ends of the envelope and the center portion thereof are effectively opened by the claws and the tongue respectively.

A dimensional weighing apparatus is disclosed which has a weighing scale for determining the actual weight of a carton placed thereon, and associated therewith is a measuring frame having movable carton contact means for measuring the linear distance of the three axes of a carton positioned on the scale necessary to determine the volume of the carton. A computer processing means determines firstly whether the actual volume of the carton is less or greater than a predetermined threshold volume, and if greater, calculates a dimensional weight of the carton and compares the dimensional weight of the carton with the actual weight to determine which weight is the larger, and sends a signal indicative of the larger weight to a shipping system which calculates a realistic shipping charge for the carton based on the weight determined by the dimensional weighing apparatus to be the larger of the two weights.

Dimensional weighing apparatus

A mailing machine comprising a control system, a print head having individual print elements which are selectively energizable for printing on an envelope and a transport system for feeding the envelope past the print head. The transport system including a first pulley, a second pulley in proximate location to the print head, an endless belt extending between the first and second pulley, the endless belt engaging the envelope and feeding the envelope past the print head, a drive system for causing the endless belt to rotate and an encoder system operatively coupled to the second pulley for providing signals indicative of the position of the second pulley. The control system in operative communication with the print head, the encoder system and the drive system for synchronizing the feeding of the envelope with energizing of the elements of the print head.

Mailing machine

An apparatus for adjusting and then maintaining the leveling support of an assembly relative to the surface upon which that assembly has been placed. The apparatus can be locked or maintained in place to prevent the loosening of the adjustment if the assembly is moved. The apparatus is comprised of an elastomeric material molded concentrically around a threaded stud to form a foot; a plurality of longitudinal grooves on the interior wall of the foot; a plurality of longitudinal ridges on the outside surface of an extension from the base section of the assembly; and, a threaded insert within the extension that can mate with the threaded stud.

Scale locking foot

A transport apparatus for a weighing module includes a scale which has a deck connected to a scale base for weighing an object placed on the deck. The deck has slots for accommodating dual thickness belts which are arranged below the deck to be in substantial registration with the slots. The belts are positioned with respect to the slot such that in a home position a thinner section of the belt does not protrude through the slot whereby the transport means does not interfere with weighing of the object on the deck. When the belts are actuated, the dual thickness belts move so that a thicker section of each belt protrudes through the slot as the belts are being driven to thereby lift the object from the deck onto the thicker section of the belt to transport the object on the belt. In a particular embodiment, the thicker section comprises lugs which include initial tapered transition lugs to assure lifting of the object.

Apparatus for removing an envelope from a stream of envelopes moving along a straight path. The apparatus includes: an envelope turner; a device for raising and lowering the downstream end of the envelope turner; an envelope sealer situated adjacent and downstream of the envelope turner; a device for detecting an envelope to be ejected; and a device for signaling the raising and lowering device to be raised in order to feed an envelope to be ejected over the envelope sealer.

Ejection apparatus for modular envelope inserter

Translatable registration apparatus in an envelope turning machine. The apparatus includes: a deck for transporting a plurality of envelopes from an upstream location to a downstream location; a translatable carriage mounted to the deck and adjustable for upstream and downstream movement to accommodate different size envelopes; a yoke pivotably mounted at its upstream end to the carriage, the yoke having a stopping finger projecting upwardly at its downstream end; a solenoid located beneath the finger and mounted to the carriage; and a device engaging the solenoid and the yoke for moving the finger up above the deck and down below the deck, wherein, when the solenoid raises the finger above the deck, the stopping finger is locked in a raised position with no pressure bearing on the solenoid.

Stopping device for envelope turner

A method of adjusting inserting apparatus capable of inserting a plurality of documents into envelopes of varying size. The method includes locating an envelope with an open flap on a template having a plurality of scales thereon for determining whether or not the inserting apparatus can accommodate the size of the envelope placed on the template and for adjusting a plurality of adjustable mechanical elements of the inserting apparatus in order to process the envelope placed on the template, and adjusting the mechanical elements in accordance with the readings on the scales.

Method for adjusting an inserting machine

Apparatus for turning an envelope, including: a housing; a transport deck secured to the housing for transporting an envelope from an upstream location to a downstream location, the deck including a device for moving the envelope; a vertically extending spindle located beneath the deck, the spindle being rotatable and reciprocable and having an upper end capable of extending above the transport deck; a device for raising and rotating the spindle; and a clamping arm assembly rotatably mounted to the housing situated above the transport deck, the clamping arm assembly having a device for applying a light, downward bias on the envelope against the upper end of the spindle, and a device for applying additional pressure to the envelope after the spindle is raised.
