Joint, adaptive control of equalization, synchronization, and gain in a digital communications receiver

The present invention uses a novel adaptive soft decision device in order to jointly optimize decision device and DFE operation. The soft decision device receives the input and output samples of the slicer and generates a feedback sample by non-linearly combining them with respect to a single decision reference parameter. Moreover, the soft decision device provides novel error terms used to adapt equalizer coefficients in order to jointly optimize decision device and equalizer coefficients.

A broadband, high-gain, active antenna system is disclosed, which operates with a bi-directive reception pattern while in its standard configuration and with a directive reception pattern over several octaves of Radio Frequency (RF) spectrum when affixed with a tuned scatter-plate. As a standalone active antenna system the disclosed antenna probe element and the amplifier subassembly exhibit the bi-directional directive properties of a standard fixed length dipole, while the addition of a scatter-plate makes the antenna directive with separate frequency-dependant directive modes. The scatter-plate can be tuned such that these separate directive modes occur at convenient areas of the RF frequency spectrum. Other means of achieving directivity are disclosed using the antenna probe element and the amplifier subassembly.

Directive, broadband, high gain, active antenna system

A decision feedback equalizer (DFE) architecture uses feedback samples that are over-sampled with respect to the symbol rate. On-baud feedback samples are quantized with a slicer, while off-baud samples are linear, IIR samples. Both forward and feedback filters are fractionally-spaced, but adapted only at the baud instances.

Compensation methods and apparatus are disclosed for mitigating non-linear distortion of high power amplifiers used in communication transmitters, based on the minimization of the symbol error, in particular, for communication systems transmitting data embedded in existing co-channel signals. To overcome the difficulty of constructing pre-distortion mapping from the symbol error, an adaptive algorithm is disclosed to update compensation parameters for pre-distortion mapping. Another method exploits a test signal interval in the co-channel signal. During a known constant co-channel signal, distortion is estimated as a complex number and used to construct compensation parameters. The latter is further expanded by employing the adaptive algorithm for the non-test signal intervals.

Symbol error based compensation methods for nonlinear amplifier distortion

According to some aspects of this invention, a compact, broadband active receiving antenna uses one or more high transconductance transistors such as Field Effect Transistor(s) paired with another Transistor and arranged in a Cascode amplifier configuration. Some embodiments involve a single high transconductance transistor arranged with a high efficiency transformer in a nondissipative feedback loop to improve linearity and dynamic range. The devices have a high input resistance, low input capacitance, low noise and a very high second and third order Intercept Point. Since the gain is primarily a function of the amplifying electronics, it is not necessary to increase the directivity of the antenna to achieve higher gain.

Miniature ultra-wideband active receiving antenna

An electronic musical instrument which has any desired compass of musical sounds and which produces justly intoned pitches based on any desired pitch or note and which is capable of changing at will during performance the basic pitch or the 'do' (of do, re, me, etc.). The instrument has a single master oscillator having means for changing the pulse interval at will and during performance. The output of the oscillator is fed to a system of counters and gates, the output of which is a number of pulse trains which are related in frequency by ratios of small integers and which ratios are maintained unchanged regardless of the frequencies of the various outputs. The instrument includes a keycylinderin place of the usual keyboard and it has on its surface several helices of conductive contacts. The keycylinder is of a size to be accommodated in the hands of the operator with the contacts readily accessible to the operator's fingers and has the capability, by rotation or bodily movement of varying the intervals of the oscillator and thereby the pitch or frequency of the various outputs while, at the same time, maintaining the interval ratios established by the counters and gates. The keycylinder further has those contacts which produce consonant sounds disposed in close relation to each other so that up to four contacts may be jointly touched by a single finger or the thumb of the operator at one time.
