Described are novel photochromic pyrano-fused naphthopyran compounds, examples of which are naphthopyran compounds having a substituted or unsubstituted 'S' pyran ring, the 3,4 positions of which are fused to the f side of the naphtho portion of the naphthopyran, and certain substituents at the 2-position of the 'T' pyran ring. Certain substituents may also be present at the number 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12 carbon atoms of the compounds. These compounds may be represented by the following graphic formula: ##STR1## Also described are polymeric organic host materials that contain or that are coated with such compounds or combinations thereof with complementary photochromic compounds, e.g., certain other naphthopyrans, benzopyrans, and spiro(indoline)type compounds.

Photochromic pyrano-fused naphthopyrans

A method of preparing photochromic materials useful for optical applications, and photochromic materials prepared by such method, are described. Such method comprises polymerizing a blend of a polyol[(meth)acryloyl terminated carbonate] monomer and a photochromic amount of an organic photochromic substance, thereby forming a photochromic material. A preferred polyol[(meth)acryloyl terminated carbonate] monomer is diethylene glycol bis[(methacryloyloxy)ethylene carbonate]. Polymerization may be performed by free radical initiation using thermal initiators, photoinitiators or a combination of such initiators. Photochromic materials prepared by such method may be used in optical applications, e.g., photochromic lenses.

Method of preparing photochromic articles

Describes polymerizable organic compositions of from about 30 to 95 weight percent of a first monomer component which is a polyol[(meth)acryloyl terminated carbonate], e.g., diethylene glycol bis[(methacryloyloxy)ethylene carbonate)]; and from about 5 to 70 weight percent of at least one monomer component selected from: (i) an alkoxylated diol, e.g., alkoxylated bisphenol, having acrylate or methacrylate groups, e.g., dimethacrylate of bisphenol A having 25 to 35 ethoxy units, (ii) a bis[(meth)acryloyl-terminated]polyethylene glycol, and (iii) a monomer having at least three ethylenically-unsaturated terminal groups. Substantially completely cured polymerizates prepared from such compositions may be used to prepare photochromic articles, e.g., lenses, by incorporating a photochromic substance, e.g., by thermal transfer, into the polymerizate.

Describes polymerizable organic resin compositions of from about 70 to 90 weight percent of a polyol(allyl carbonate), e.g., diethylene glycol bis(allyl carbonate), and from about 30 to 70 weight percent of aliphatic polyurethane having terminal allylic unsaturation. The polymerizable compositions have initiated pot life times of at least about 24 hours at 25.degree. C. and castings that have low yellowness (b*) values. Polymerizates prepared from such compositions may be used to prepare photochromic articles, e.g., lenses, by incorporating a photochromic substance, e.g., by thermal transfer, into the polymerizate.

Describes organic resin compositions of from about 30 to 90 weight percent of a polyol(allyl carbonate), e.g., diethylene glycol bis(allyl carbonate), and from about 10 to 70, e.g., 10 to 30, weight percent of a mixture of aliphatic urethanes, the terminal portions of which contain allyl or acrylyl functional groups. Polymerizable compositions prepared from such compositions produce castings which have low yellowness (b*) values and which do not pre-release from the molds in which they are formed. Polymerizates prepared from such compositions may be used to prepare photochromic articles, e.g., lenses, by incorporating a photochromic substance, e.g., by thermal transfer, into the polymerizate.

Disclosed is a process for preparing aminofunctional silicone fluids substantially free of alkoxy groups by equilibrating a partially hydrolyzed aminofunctional dialkoxy or trialkoxy silane with a trialkylsiloxy terminated poly(dialkylsiloxane) followed by equilibration with a silanol terminated poly(dialkylsiloxane).
