A radio housing () is formed of a front plate () having screw mount receptacles () and first and second side plates (). The first and second side plates () have a plurality of non-symmetrical, three-dimensional (3-D), dovetail sections () for aligning and capturing the screw mount receptacles () of the front plate (). The front plate () and first and second side plates () are formed of an injection molded thermoplastic material. The three pieces () are coupled together. The three-piece injection housing formed of injunction molded materials allows the housing () to be customized to specific customer requests not currently available with past overmolded materials.

A battery connector system for connecting a battery to a battery powered device is provided herein that includes an insert molded contact block comprising a contact block, a plurality of electrical contacts insert molded into the contact block, and an outer electrical connection for electrically coupling the plurality of electrical contacts to the battery powered device. The battery connector system further includes an inner electrical connection located on a housing enclosure for electrically coupling the battery housed in the housing enclosure to the outer electrical connection through the plurality of electrical contacts. The battery connector system further includes a sealed electrical path between the inner electrical connection and the outer electrical connection, wherein the sealed electrical path is formed by over molding the insert molded contact block with the housing enclosure.

A battery interface assembly for a communication device (), such as a portable radio, is provided to ensure a reliable interconnection between battery contacts () and radio contacts (). Communication device () includes a casting () having a cavity () with two apertures formed therein (). The two apertures () open into the cavity () to provide a point of contact for mating radio contacts () to the battery contacts (). The battery contacts () are wiping contacts which mate with the radio contacts () as the battery is slid into the casting (). A compression seal () is provided to the radio contacts () while a radial seal () is provided about the battery contacts () to ensure reliable electrical and physical connection under a variety of environments.

A sealing system for sealing a component () within an electronic device () is provided. The system includes one or more apertures () within an internal housing (). Further the system includes an adhesive (), adhered on a first surface to a ledge () and bottom perimeter surfaceof the component. Furthermore, the system includes an external housing (). The external housing presses the perimeter of the component onto the ledge.

An interconnect assembly for a clam style portable communication device () provides for a hermetically sealed device that prevents water intrusion. A flex () electrically interconnects a flip compartment () to a main radio compartment (). First and second seals () coupled to the ends () of the flex () provide independent sealing of the flip compartment () from the main radio compartment (). Thus, the flex () provides both electrical interconnect and independent mechanical sealing of the two compartments ().

A submersible electrical connector assembly () includes an electrical connector () mounted to a first substrate () where a second substrate () adjoins the first substrate (). The second substrate () is comprised of a pliable material that acts as a seal. The first substrate and second substrate are positioned within a compartmentalized area of an electrical device housing for preventing water or other fluid from entering an aperture within the housing. Although water may inadvertently enter the electrical connector (), the connector assembly () is substantially submersible since water is prevented from entering the housing () as used for an electronic device.

A keypad assembly () for a communication device () utilizes two boards, a main circuit board () with electronic components including light emitting diodes (LEDs) () and a keypad board (). A lightguide () is sandwiched between the two boards (), the lightguide having window protrusions () to accommodate the LEDs (). The keypad board () has openings () within which the window protrusions () align in order to provide backlighting and sealing to the communication device ().

A latching mechanism is provided. The latching mechanism includes a first member (,) having a first catch (,) and lateral catches (,), and a second member (,) having a notch (,) and lateral catches (,). In a first position, the first catch of the first member engages the notch of the second member. In a second position, the lateral catches of the first member engage the lateral catches of the second member. Further, when in the first position, the first catch and the notch are disengaged by squeezing one of the members at lateral points while sliding the members relative to one another until the lateral catches are engaged and the members are in the second position. Also provided is a battery pack (,) having such a latching mechanism. Additionally, there is provided an electronic device that includes an operational unit (,), a tray (,) for holding battery cells, and a cover (,). The tray is removably coupled to the operational unit, and the cover is removably coupled to the tray. In an operating position, the operational unit is latched to the tray, and the cover is latched to the tray. The cover can be slid from the operating position to a maintenance position in which the cover and tray are coupled together so that either the tray and cover can be removed from the operational unit together, or the cover can be slid further and removed from the tray while the tray remains latched to the operational unit.
