A method to perform a drilling operation. The method includes calibrating an axial survey sensor of a bottom hole assembly (BHA) by obtaining, from the axial survey sensor, a data log as a first function of azimuthal angle within a borehole, generating, by a computer processor of the BHA and using a pre-determined algorithm, a fitted curve as a second function of the azimuthal angle, wherein the fitted curve is generated based on the data log to represent a calibration error of the axial survey sensor, and extracting, by the computer processor of the BHA, a calibration parameter from the fitted curve. Accordingly, the drilling operation is performed using at least the axial survey sensor based on the calibration parameter.

Dynamic calibration of axial accelerometers and magnetometers

A technique facilitates drilling of wellbores or other types of bore holes in a variety of applications. A steerable system is designed with a main shaft coupled to a drill bit shaft by a universal joint to provide steering functionality. A sensor system is mounted on the steerable system and comprises at least one sensor positioned to measure desired parameters, such as weight on bit and/or torque on bit parameters during drilling.

Instrumented drilling system

A method, system, and computer readable medium is disclosed to estimate a survey parameter (e.g., attitude) for a drilling operation in a subterranean formation. The survey parameter is calculated using multiple methods with the results of the different methods weighted to improve the accuracy at a given attitude of the tool and angular velocity of the sensor package. Results from the different methods are combined based on a weighting function to generate the improved values of inclination and azimuth. Specifically, the values of the weighting function depend, linearly or non-linearly, on the attitude of the tool and quality of the survey data. In one scenario, the attitude of the tool is approximated by the most recently obtained static inclination/azimuth. In addition, the quality of the survey data is approximated by a measure of vibration severity that is represented by the number of good data points based on the roll rate.

Weighting function for inclination and azimuth computation

A technique facilitates drilling of wellbores or other types of bore holes in a variety of applications. A steerable system or other well tool is designed with a plurality of actuators which are positioned to provide controlled steering during a drilling operation. Each actuator includes at least one loose element or ball slidably mounted in a corresponding sleeve. Pressurized fluid is used to provide controlled movement of the elements along the corresponding sleeves of the actuators. The controlled movement of the elements assists in the provision of steering or other control over the well tool during the drilling operation.

Directional drilling system

A pressure compensated sensor assembly for determining loads near a drill bit may include a body member having an inner diameter and an outer diameter, a sleeve member having an inner diameter and an outer diameter, the sleeve member being coupled to the body member, a first gap having a thickness and a length dimension formed between the body member and the sleeve member, and one or more sensors coupled to the sleeve member. The one or more sensors may measure axial and torsional loads on the sleeve member without measuring parasitic strain induced on the body member.

Dry pressure compensated sensor

A system transmits a wireless power transmission from a bottom hole assembly of a drill string. The system has a downhole component having a wireless power transmitter adapted to wirelessly transmit at least one wireless power transmission and a wireless power receiver adapted to receive the at least one wireless power transmission.

Systems and methods for providing wireless power transmissions and tuning a transmission frequency

An apparatus and method for determining forces on a downhole drilling tool is provided. The downhole tool is provided with a drill collar operatively connectable to the drilling tool, and a sensor mounted about the drill collar. The sensor is adapted to measure deformation of the drill collar whereby forces on the drilling tool are determined. The sensor may be part of a force measurement system, a strain gauge system or a drilling jar system. The drill collar is adapted to magnify and/or isolate the deformation applied to the drill string.

Downhole tool sensor system and method

A formation evaluation system for a subterranean formation penetrated by a wellbore. The formation evaluation system is provided with a downhole tool and a sensor. The downhole tool is positionable in the wellbore. The downhole tool has a downhole electromagnetic unit for communication with a surface electromagnetic unit. The sensor determines at least one wellsite parameter from the electromagnetic signal. The downhole tool and the surface electromagnetic unit are adapted to pass electromagnetic signals there between. The electromagnetic signals pass through the subterranean formation whereby the senor determines the at least one wellsite parameter from the electromagnetic signal.
