In an embodiment, the method includes summing a runtime of an auxiliary heat source of the HVAC system over a plurality of time blocks. Additionally, the method includes summing an expected runtime of the auxiliary heat source over the plurality of time blocks. Further, the method includes comparing the runtime sum with the expected runtime sum, wherein the expected runtime for each of the plurality of time blocks is a function of an outdoor ambient temperature over a time-delay block beginning before the corresponding time block.

Systems and methods for diagnosing a loss of capacity of a climate control system

Improvements to an HVAC thermostat include a sleep-enhancing feature which regulates the target temperature of the HVAC system according to a temperature profile which complements the natural changes in body temperature of a person during sleep. The timing of the temperature profile is advanced to cause room temperature to decrease before the natural decrease in body temperature is expected to occur, thereby helping lead a person into sleep without the use of pharmaceuticals or other artificial sleeping aids. The temperature profile causes room temperature to increase towards the end of the sleep period, thus avoiding disruptions of sleep when body temperature is lowest or during REM stages of sleep when the human body's ability to thermo-regulate is diminished. The rate of change of the target environment temperature is controlled to further enhance the quality and duration of sleep.

In an embodiment, the method includes determining an expected runtime of the HVAC system required to achieve a temperature setpoint in a comfort zone of the HVAC system following a triggering event, wherein the expected runtime is based on a design temperature of a geographic location at which the HVAC system is installed. Additionally, the method includes monitoring a current runtime of the HVAC system elapsed following the triggering event, and comparing the expected runtime with the current runtime of the HVAC system elapsed following the triggering event.

Systems and methods for detecting a fault in a climate control system

Systems and methods are disclosed for validating the installation and operation of a fault detection and diagnostic module that monitors a component of an HVAC system. A remote diagnostic server is in operative communication with the HVAC system, and with the fault detection and diagnostic module. A user device communicates data to the remote diagnostic server that defines an association between the fault detection and diagnostic module and the HVAC system. The remote diagnostic server initiates an installation validation by sending a command to the HVAC system that causes the monitored component to initiate an event that is expected to be reported by the fault detection and diagnostic module. For example, a fan motor is turned on. If correctly installed, the fault detection and diagnostic module senses the event, and reports the event to the remote diagnostic server, which confirms the association. The remote diagnostic server sends a message to the user device indicating the result of the validation.

Method of associating a diagnostic module to HVAC system components

Methods and related systems for measuring a temperature with an onboard sensor of a device of a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system are disclosed. In an embodiment, the method includes (a) changing a power state of the device from off to on, and (b) detecting a raw temperature with the sensor after (a). In addition, the method includes (c) determining a time offset along a predetermined time and temperature relationship for the device, and (d) calculating a temperature offset with the predetermined time and temperature relationship at the time offset. An HVAC system includes an indoor unit, an outdoor unit, a thermostat, and a remote control device. The indoor unit comprises a first variable speed drive (VSD) to control a speed of HVAC rotary components within the indoor unit, and the outdoor unit comprises a second VSD to control a speed of HVAC rotary components within the outdoor unit. The thermostat in communication with the indoor unit and the outdoor unit comprises a communication interface, and a system controller in communication with the communication interface. The remote control device transmits a signal to the system controller to alter the speed of the HVAC rotary components, where the HVAC rotary components operate at a high speed mode which is above the preset speed limit of the respective HVAC rotary component to achieve an enhanced cooling mode.

Time-constrained control of an HVAC system

A heating, ventilation and air condition (HVAC) system is provided. The system includes a thermostat including an onboard temperature sensor, a remote temperature sensor in operable communication with the thermostat, and a controller in operable communication with each of the onboard sensor and the remote sensor and configured to execute a control algorithm that calculates a temperature difference between a temperature detected by the onboard temperature sensor and a temperature detected by the remote temperature sensor, such that when the remote temperature sensor fails, the controller uses the calculated temperature difference to calibrate the onboard temperature sensor and set the thermostat to the temperature detected by the remote temperature sensor.
