A rotor is disclosed, which includes a plurality of axially extending slots disposed about the rotor; a plurality of conductors radially stacked within each of the axial slots; and an axially extending subslot at a radially inward end of each of the slots. In each slot, a cooling path is provided, extending radially outward from the subslot. The cooling path includes at least one manifold, each manifold including at least one ingress passage, at least one egress passage axially distanced from the ingress passage, and a plurality of axially extending passages in fluid connection at a first end with one of the at least one ingress passages, and at a second end with one of the at least one egress passages. Each of the plurality of axially extending passages is disposed at a different radial depth in the slot from each other axially extending passage.

Rotor with cooling manifolds

Embodiments of the invention relate generally to electromagnetic devices and, more particularly, to the compression of stator core laminations using wire rope members and to stator cores and electromagnetic devices employing such wire rope members. In one embodiment, the invention includes: affixing a first end of a wire rope member to a first flange plate disposed adjacent a first end of a plurality of stator laminations; affixing a second end of the wire rope member to a second flange plate disposed adjacent a second end of the plurality of stator laminations; tensioning at least one of the first end or the second end of the wire rope member against at least one of the first flange plate and the second flange plate to exert a compressive force against the first flange plate, the second flange plate, and the plurality of stator laminations.

Stator core compression

An approach for cooling a stator core flange is provided. In one aspect, a pair of stator flanges each disposed at opposing ends of a stator core assembly maintains a compressive load on the stator core assembly. Heat transport tubes may be located about at least one of the stator flanges at an end of the stator core assembly to redistribute heat therefrom.

An electrical machine component monitoring system includes a light source that provides an optical signal through a fiber optic cable and a fiber optic sensing component positioned on the electrical machine component or at a standoff distance from the electrical machine component to obtain a responsive optical signal representative of a condition of the electrical machine component. The system further includes a photodetector to receive the responsive optical signal from the fiber optic sensing component and to convert the responsive optical signal to an electrical signal. A processing circuitry is also provided in the system for determining information regarding dirt on the electrical machine component by analyzing the electrical signal.

Embodiments of the invention relate generally to rotor installation systems and, more particularly, to permanent magnet rotor installation systems, including those having an in situ magnetizer or magnet insertion device. In one embodiment, the invention provides a rotor installation system comprising: at least one magnetizer for permanently magnetizing a ferromagnetic material; and an arbor for receiving a rotor having at least one portion including a ferromagnetic material, wherein the at least one magnetizer is positioned relative to the arbor to allow permanent magnetization of the ferromagnetic material.

A midlength balanced rotor comprises a rotor assembly for rotation about an axis of rotation defining at least one of an axially extended, radially concentric, centerline borehole; an array of radially or tangentially distributed, axially extended pockets; and a series of radially or tangentially distributed, axially extended slots. At least one balance weight is positioned within at least one of the axially extended, radially concentric, centerline borehole, the array of radially or tangentially distributed, axially extended pockets, or the radially or tangentially distributed, axially extended slots to balance the rotor assembly. Alternatively, at least one balance correcting mass is removed from at least one of the axially extended, radially concentric, centerline borehole, the array of radially or tangentially distributed, axially extended pockets, or the radially or tangentially distributed, axially extended slots to balance the rotor assembly. In addition, a method of midlength balancing a rotor comprises the steps of providing a rotor assembly with at least one of an axially extended, radially concentric, centerline borehole; an array of radially or tangentially distributed, axially extended pockets; and a series of radially or tangentially distributed, axially extended slots; rotating the rotor shaft about an axis of rotation; determining unbalance of the rotor shaft; and adding or removing weight to at least one of said an axially extended, radially concentric, centerline borehole; array of radially or tangentially distributed, axially extended pockets; or series of radially or tangentially distributed, axially extended slots, to balance the rotor shaft.

Method and apparatus for balancing a rotor

A cooling gas ventilation chimney is provided for enhancing the heat transfer of an end region of a dynamoelectric machine. The dynamoelectric machine includes a rotor having a plurality of radial slots. A plurality of coils are seated in the radial slots, and the coils form a plurality of radially stacked turns. The ventilation chimney includes one or more chimney slots defined in at least a portion of the radially stacked turns. The chimney slots extend in a substantially radial direction to the rotor, and some of the chimney slots have an axial or circumferential length different from other chimney slots.

Heat transfer enhancement of ventilation chimneys for dynamoelectric machine rotors

A compressor assembly for use in transporting natural gas is provided. The assembly includes a natural gas compressor comprising at least one stage of compression, a permanent magnet-type super-synchronous motor coupled to the natural gas compressor for powering said compressor, and a housing, the compressor positioned within the housing, and the compressor configured to facilitate increasing a pressure of natural gas being transmitted.

Methods and apparatus for transporting natural gas through a pipeline

A rotor is provided for a dynamoelectric machine having one or more windings. The windings have one or more turns, and the turns have one or more outlet ducts that are located near a chimney. When the outlet ducts are stacked one on top of another, they form substantially radially oriented passages. The heat transfer performance of a portion of the rotor can be improved by locating two or more circumferentially spaced radial ducts near the chimney. A chimney can also be formed of one or more chimney slots defined in at least a portion of the turns, where one or more chimney slots extend in a substantially slanted direction to a radial direction of the rotor. A transition region of the rotor can also include one or more diagonal flow channels, which discharge into one or more chimneys.

Heat transfer enhancement of dynamoelectric machine rotors

A stator for an electrical machine includes teeth assembled from a plurality of stacked laminations mounted on a cylindrical protective surface thereby forming a plurality of slots. The stator also includes an armature winding assembled within the teeth by inserting components of the armature winding into the plurality of stator slots from positions external to the teeth in a manner that facilitates mitigating potential for coil distortion. The armature winding includes a plurality of coils that each include an end winding. The stator further includes a segmented yoke inserted around the armature winding in a manner that facilitates mitigating a potential for disturbing the end winding of the coils. Independently assembling the stator components in this manner facilitates varying a thickness and/or the number of heat conducting laminations between the yoke and teeth that subsequently facilitates heat transfer from the armature winding to an outer pressure casing of the machine.

Apparatus for using an electrical machine to transport fluids through a pipeline

An electrical machine to facilitate transporting fluids through a pipeline is provided. The electrical machine includes a rotor assembly that further includes an array of magnets configured to generate a distributed magnetic field. The rotor assembly has corrosion-resistant features that facilitates mitigating deleterious effects to the rotor assembly while being exposed to aggressive and harsh fluids.

Methods and apparatus for using an electrical machine to transport fluids through a pipeline

An electrical machine to facilitate transporting fluids through a pipeline is provided. The machine includes a stator, a rotor magnetically coupled to the stator, and a housing enclosing the rotor and the stator. The housing includes a wall that facilitates channeling a first fluid at a first pressure through a portion of the housing. The machine also includes a stator enclosure defined by at least one wall that facilitates maintaining a second fluid within the stator enclosure. The stator enclosure is positioned within the electric machine housing. The stator enclosure has at least one wall that substantially isolates the second fluid from the first fluid such that only the second fluid is in flow communication with the stator. The stator enclosure has at least one wall that facilitates heat transfer from the second fluid to the first fluid. At least a portion of at least one of the stator enclosure walls is configured to facilitate equalizing the first pressure and the second pressure.

An enclosure for a rotor in a generator including the rotor, rotor windings and a stator, the enclosure comprising a plurality of composite rings located adjacent one another along a length dimension of the rotor so as to contain the rotor windings on the rotor, the rings each comprising at least two layers selected from the group consisting essentially of metals, glass fiber laminates and graphite fiber laminates.

A rotor in a electrical machine comprises a magnetic core having at least two poles, a plurality of winding assemblies, one for each pole, and a damper winding enclosing at least a portion of the magnetic core and winding assemblies. The damper winding has (i) a plurality of electrically conductive rings concentric with a rotational axis of the magnetic core and (ii) a plurality of bars extending parallel to the rotational axis of the magnetic core and connecting to each of the rings. A radially outward surface of each of the bars is connected to a respective radially inner surface of each of the rings. A spindle of the magnetic core has first and second flat surfaces extending perpendicular to a direct axis of the magnetic core. The magnetic core may include first and second projections extending in opposite directions along the quadrature axis.
