Provided is a whipstock and well system. The whipstock, in one aspect, includes a coupling section having a first radius of curvature, the coupling section configured to engage with a mill bit when running in hole. The whipstock, in accordance with this aspect, further includes a casing breakthrough section having a second radius of curvature, and a controlled exit section having a third radius of curvature, wherein the second radius of curvature is less than the third radius of curvature.

Whipstock for use with a mill bit including varying material removal rates

A mill bit and a well system are covered. The mill bit, in one aspect, includes a tubular having an uphole end and a downhole end. The mill bit, in accordance with this aspect, further includes a first cutting section having one or more first cutting surfaces disposed about the tubular, the first cutting section having a first material removal rate and configured to engage with wellbore casing disposed within a wellbore. The mill bit, in accordance with this disclosure, further includes a second cutting section having one or more second cutting surfaces disposed about the tubular, the second cutting section having a second material removal rate less than the first material removal rate and configured to engage with a whipstock disposed within the wellbore.

Mill bit including varying material removal rates

A remotely and mechanically actuated RCD control tool adjusts at least one component of an RCD latch assembly between at least two settings. The mechanical RCD control tool comprises a rotational cylinder and a guide cylinder, the rotational cylinder configured to rotate in a rotational direction to adjust the RCD latch assembly from a first setting to a second setting and from the second setting to the first setting based on movement of the drive cylinder in a selected direction. Additional apparatus, methods, and systems are disclosed.

Mechanical rotating control device latch assembly

A latch assembly is described for use with a rotating control device. The rotating control device provides a rotating seal to permit pressure control in an annulus surrounding a rotating tubular member such as a drill string in an offshore drilling operation. The latch assembly is operable to engage and disengage a body of the rotating control device from a remote surface location by wireless communication. An on-board actuation system is carried by the latch assembly such that no energy lines (hydraulic or otherwise) are required to couple the latch assembly to the surface location. The latch assembly may include both an operating latch mechanism and a running latch mechanism to selectively couple the latch assembly to one or both of the body of the rotating control device and a tubular member such as a drill string or other conveyance for running and pulling operations.

Latch assembly using on-board miniature hydraulics for RCD applications

A controlled release nanoparticulate matter delivery system includes a plurality of thermoresponsive modules containing a respective nanoparticulate matter. Each thermoresponsive module is selectively operable in at least one of a heating mode that releases the nanoparticulate matter and a cooling mode that inhibits release of the nanoparticulate matter. A control module is in electrical communication with the plurality of thermoresponsive modules. The control module is configured to determine a temperature of each thermoresponsive module and to select the at least one heating mode and cooling mode based on the temperature. The heating and cooling mode may be selected in response to a desired dosing profile and/or a biometric condition.

Controlled release nanoparticulate matter delivery system

An integrated rotating control device and gas handling system for a marine drilling system is disclosed. The system includes a flow spool; a riser sealing tool coupled to the flow spool; a rotating control device coupled to the riser sealing tool below a tension ring of a riser section of a drilling riser, the rotating control device fluidically coupled to the flow spool; and an auxiliary line routed around the rotating control device between the riser sealing tool and the riser section.

Integrated rotating control device and gas handling system for a marine drilling system

A latching assembly for use in a well system is provided. The latching assembly can include an outer mandrel and a running tool coupling assembly coupled to a first longitudinal end of the outer mandrel. The running tool coupling assembly can be operable to couple to a running tool that includes a drill string component. The latching assembly can be controllable using the running tool. The latching assembly can also include a bearing coupling assembly coupled to a second longitudinal end of the outer mandrel that is opposite longitudinally with respect to the first longitudinal end. The bearing coupling assembly can be operable to couple to a bearing assembly. The latching assembly can further include a rotating control device (RCD) coupling assembly coupled to the side of the outer mandrel. The RCD coupling assembly can be operable to couple to an RCD positioned in the well system.

Mechanically coupling a bearing assembly to a rotating control device

A rotating control device (RCD), for use in drilling a wellbore, includes an RCD body, a sealing element, and a bearing assembly disposed within the RCD body and supporting an inner mandrel to rotate relative to the RCD body. The sealing element is carried by the inner mandrel, and the bearing assembly includes a bearing sealed in an internal bearing fluid chamber. The internal bearing fluid chamber includes a bearing fluid maintained at a pressure greater than a pressure of wellbore fluid in an interior of the RCD body by a pressure compensating piston between the bearing fluid contacting a first end of the piston and the wellbore fluid contacting a second, opposite end of the piston.

Pressurizing rotating control devices

A reinforced seal for maintaining a pressure differential in a well bore includes an elastomeric layer and a backup layer between a drill pipe and the elastomeric layer at the wellhead. The backup layer has a first end portion, a second end portion, and a tapered portion, wherein the first end portion has a larger inner diameter than the second end portion and the tapered portion connects the first end portion and second end portion. In addition, the backup layer includes a plurality of slats substantially aligned with the longitudinal axis of the drill pipe and arranged circumferentially about the perimeter of the drill pipe along the internal surface of the backup layer such that a portion of each slat underlies a portion of each adjacent slat.

A system is provided that can include a rotating control device (RCD) with a sealing element and a force measurement device for measuring an axial force imparted to the sealing element. The system can also include a computing device that is communicatively coupled to the force measurement device for receiving the axial force measurements and from which the wear status of the sealing element can be determined.
