A force absorbing device for a footwear appliance includes a shoe sole having a planar sole surface, such that the shoe sole is adapted to be disposed against a ground surface such as turf, grass or dirt. A ground interface member having a general appearance of a footwear cleat extends from the planar sole surface. Within the sole, the ground interface member couples to a force mitigation assembly for absorbing forces against the cleat. The force mitigation assembly includes an elastic field of a resilient, compressible material, and an inclined surface is disposed against the elastic field and oriented to compress the elastic field. A linkage or connecting surface transmits a displacement force for disposing the inclined surface across the elastic field, where the inclined surface compresses the elastic field as it moves across. In response, the elastic field exerts a counterforce against the ground interface member.

Impact absorbing footwear protrusion

A force dissipating device in a footwear appliance includes an actuator responsive to a displacement force from a shoe sole surface, and an elastic field of resilient, compressible material. The elastic field is elongated in a direction aligned with the displacement force, and an inclined surface is attached to the actuator and disposed against the elastic field. The actuator is adapted for movement parallel to the elastic field, while the inclined surface is oriented to compress the elastic field in a direction defined by the inclined surface. The inclined surface is oriented at an angle to compress the elastic field in a direction substantially perpendicular to vertical actuator displacement, thus providing a constant region of opposed, compressive force that is generally constant, rather than increasing with displacement distance.

Downwards absorbing and upwards accommodating footwear heel

An impact absorbing ski binding interface device includes an elongated top plate having a toe end and a heel end adapted to engage a boot toe and a boot heel, respectively, and a bottom plate adapted to engage a ski, thereby securing the device between the boot and ski. A plurality of constant force spring linkages between the top plate and the bottom plate include a constant force spring linkage between the toe end and the bottom plate, and a constant force spring linkage between the heel end and the bottom plate, such that each of the constant force spring linkages have an opposed pair of deformable members for exerting a counterforce to vertical displacement forces between the top plate and the bottom plate for load mitigation.

Ski binding suspension system for vertical load transmission

A force absorbing device for a footwear appliance includes a shoe upper and a shoe sole having a planar sole surface, such that forces between the shoe upper and planar sole surface in ground contact are absorbed by force mitigation assemblies disposed in the shoe sole. A force mitigation assembly adapted for an athletic shoe includes a linkage to a wearer interface responsive to movement based on activity of the wearer. An attachment to a sole surface receives ground forces transmitted from frictional contact between the sole surface and a surface against which the sole is disposed, such as for running, turning, etc. A force mitigation assembly absorbs these forces received from the sole surface for directing the received force in a controlled manner. An elastic field in the force mitigation assembly is defined by a resilient material adapted to deform in response to the received force.

Footwear force mitigation assembly

A ski binding reduces a likelihood of injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and the tibia is accomplished by absorption in the binding to limit loads transmitted through the boot-binding interface. Release based on an injury threshold includes a binding response tower attached to the ski and adapted for selective engagement with the ski, such that the binding response tower permits biased vertical and lateral horizontal displacement, prior to a release threshold. The binding is in communication with the boot heel and is adapted for slideable engagement in response to vertical and lateral forces exerted from the boot heel. The binding response tower adapted to disengage, or release upon reaching at least one a predetermined lateral displacement or a predetermined vertical displacement, such as when the boot heel is forced sufficiently sideways or upwards due to skier movement that would tend to cause an ACL injury.

Multi-mode load absorbing ski binding

A force absorbing device for a footwear appliance includes a shoe upper and a shoe sole having a planar sole surface, such that forces between the shoe upper and planar sole surface in ground contact are absorbed by force mitigation structures disposed in the shoe sole. A footwear article includes a split-sole system that redefines a shoe sole as coplanar surfaces having a force mitigating interface for receiving sudden forces and effectively mitigating these forces by storing kinetic energy and releasing it over time. An elastic field in the force mitigation structure is defined by a resilient material adapted to deform in response to the received force. Frictional engagement between the upper and lower sole may also be augmented by surface characteristics such as dimples, voids and lubricants, in addition to interference engagement with an elastic field.

Adjustable response elastic kinetic energy converter and storage field system for a footwear appliance

An impact absorbing footwear device employs opposed planar sole portions engaged by a selective resistance coupling that biases the opposed planar sole portions in a non-linear manner in response to forces exerted by the wearer against the sole portion in frictional contact with a floor surface. The planar sole portions are disposed in a footwear appliance that takes the form of an athletic shoe sole. The selective resistance coupling includes a plurality of resilient deformation members that engage the planar sole portions in an opposed circumferentially aligned manner, selectively deform in response to pressure exerted by the wearer for preventing ACL and other impact related injuries, and recover to an undeformed rest position without breakaway to allow the wearer uninterrupted usage while dampening forces that surpass an injury threshold from the resilient deformation that allows the planar sole portions to temporarily misalign.

Self-recovering impact absorbing footwear

An edge sharpness measurement apparatus includes a clamp for securing a test medium against a frictional member, and an engagement mechanism for a normal force, such that the normal force directs the test medium against the frictional member with a force based on operational conditions of the test medium. A further engagement mechanism is for a tangential force, in which the engagement mechanism is adapted to increase the tangential force to identify a tangential force sufficient to dispose the frictional member across the test medium. A pivot defines an angle of application of the tangential force relative to the normal force, such that disposing the frictional member across the test medium defines a point of overcoming frictional forces between the test medium and the frictional member. A measurement device, such as a gauge or range on a spring, measures the tangential force sufficient to dispose the frictional member.

Edge sharpness measurement

A ski binding heel employs a low-mass, spring-loaded interface between the heel and/or toe release mechanisms of the heel and or toe pieces of the binding and the ski boot, i.e., fast-response heel and toe cups. The low mass or lightweight fast-response heel and toe cup interfaces follows the dynamics of the ski to retain the boot during events that could cause inadvertent release (IR) in a conventional release binding. A biased, or spring loaded member engages, the boot heel/toe for mitigating loads and for absorbing sub-injury loads and compensating for movement between the boot and ski. The spring loaded members are biased toward the boot heel and toe for absorbing loads and compensating for displacements that might otherwise result in an inadvertent release. The spring loaded toe/heel cups permit movements of the boot relative to the ski flexing and counter flexing that might have otherwise resulted in an IR.

Rapid response ski binding

A ski binding device having a plate adapted to engage the ski binding, in which the plate has a heel end and a toe end, and a heel absorption mechanism is adapted to absorb excessive lateral pivoting force from the heel of a ski boot. A restrictor biases the heel into engagement with a heel receptacle. A dual pivot engages the toe end of the plate for permitting both downward movement of the heel end and lateral movement of the heel end out of alignment with the ski. The lateral pivoting force corresponds to release of potentially harmful forces. The restrictor is responsive to upward force from the toe end, as results from disproportionate backweighting of a skier. The restrictor disengages the heel end from the heel receptacle based on a predetermined release force, and permit lateral outward displacement of the heel end upon disengagement of the heel.

Ski binding plate

A skate boot appliance for absorbing impact force of landing skating maneuvers by disposing a plunger or displacement member in a receptacle in response to an impact force, such that the receptacle is attached to a skate boot bottom and has a counterforce mechanism for resisting displacement below a threshold force, and resiliently deforming in response an impact force greater than the threshold force. The impact force is transferred from a skate blade through the plunger in response to a figure skating maneuver The disclosed plunger has a post and a horizontal displacement portion adapted to be disposed through the receptacle and engage the counterforce mechanism, such as the resilient planer member, in response to the threshold impact force, in which the horizontal displacement portion includes a convex ridge or protrusion for engaging the resilient planar member along an annular surface defined by the convex ridge.

Skate boot force absorbing appliance

A portable device for measuring friction, especially friction between tire treads and road surfaces is disclosed. The portable friction tester is shaped as an equilateral triangle providing three points of contact for samples in the road surface.

Portable friction testing device

A fractal-based or 'patchwork' method for analyzing topographic data simulates covering the surface of a specimen surface with triangular patches in order to determine the relative surface area which is a function of patch size or scale of observation or interaction. The specimen surface has X and Y horizontal axes and a vertical Z axis. Height data is obtained for each point of a grid network of points on the surface, the points being arranged in parallel rows and the rows being spaced. The specimen surface is defined with triangles having a surface area equal to a preselected patch area value. The total area of the planar triangles is calculated to obtain a total measured area of value. The area of the specimen surface in the X-Y plane that is defined by the triangles is calculated to obtain a total measured area value. The total measured area value is divided by the total projected area value to obtain a relative area value. The relative values for several patch area values are plotted to obtain a slope and a threshold, or crossover, point. The threshold is indicative of a point which separates the relatively large scales of observation or interaction which are best described by Euclidean geometry from those smaller ones which are best described by fractal geometry.
