A bicycle chain ring, including an inner edge fully circumscribing both an opening and an axis of rotation; an inner surface extending between the inner edge and an outer edge where a plurality of chain ring teeth emanate; and a plurality of ramps disposed about the inner surface, wherein at least one of the plurality of ramps has a lifting surface configured to concurrently engage at least one link of a bicycle chain at two or more distinct pivot points along the length of the chain link to initiate stable lift of the bicycle chain without assistance from any of the plurality of chain ring teeth; wherein the lifting surface has a first end proximate the inner edge and a second end proximate the outer edge.

Bicycle chain rings

A bicycle chain ring for engaging a chain link of a bicycle chain, the bicycle chain ring including an inner edge fully circumscribing both an opening and an axis of rotation, an inner surface extending between the inner edge and an outer edge where a plurality of chain ring teeth emanate, and a plurality of ramps disposed about the inner surface, wherein at least one of the plurality of ramps includes a lifting surface for initiating lift of a bicycle chain without assistance from the plurality of chain ring teeth. The lifting surface extends radially along the inner surface toward the outer edge, and the at least one ramp has a first end proximate the inner edge and a second end proximate the outer edge. The second end of the at least one lifting surface terminates before reaching the bottom of a trough positioned between two or more of the plurality of chain ring teeth.

Embodiments of a front derailleur gear shifting system including various unique chain guides attached to and operating from a single pivot point. This derailleur system provides a simple, yet, elegant and robust improvement in shifting technique over conventional, lateral motion front derailleurs. Embodiments of open and closed annulus chain guides having specially shaped lifting and pulling surfaces for acting upon a bicycle chain during shifting are also disclosed. Additionally, as an optional enhancement, a dual-sided chain catcher that prevents unintended over-shifts in either direction is disclosed.

Additional embodiments of the bicycle chain rings of the present invention may be configured with one or more additional features formed within the chain rings including a transition slide, a tapered ramp face, a ramp bridge, a ramp lead, a trailing transition slide and a wear pin.

Bicycle chain rings with ramps

Embodiments of the present invention include bicycle chain rings for bicycles having specially shaped ramps, tapers and profiled teeth for improved shifting performance. The embodiments of bicycle chain rings of the present invention may be configured for large chain rings on double cranksets and large and middle chain rings on triple cranksets. The embodiments of bicycle chain rings of the present invention may also be retrofitted to existing bicycle cranksets by replacing original chain rings. The embodiments of bicycle chain rings of the present invention may further be configured for any standard crankset mounting bolt configuration and for any suitable number of teeth.

A front derailleur for shifting a bicycle chain between chain rings of a bicycle crank set. The front derailleur may include an attachment mechanism for securing the derailleur to a bicycle frame member. The front derailleur may further include a chain guide for enclosing a bicycle chain and contacting the chain during shifting. The front derailleur may further include a six link movement mechanism adjustably affixed to the attachment mechanism and chain guide for selectively moving the chain guide and enclosed bicycle chain during shifting.

The chain guide may be positioned by linear guide rods. The chain guide may have an inner lifting surface and an outer pulling surface for engaging diametrically opposed corners of a chain when viewed in cross-section.

Front derailleur and chain guide

A front derailleur including an annular chain guide for engagement and disengagement of a bicycle chain with multiple chain rings of a crankset. The annular chain guide may be positioned by linear guide rods. The annular chain guide may have an inner lifting surface and an outer pulling surface for engaging diametrically opposed corners of a chain when viewed in cross-section. The annular chain guide may have an opening defined by a polygon having at least five sides. The motion of the annular chain guide during a up-shift, i.e., displacement of the chain from a smaller chain ring to a next larger chain ring includes an upward, outward and rearward linear motion relative to a bicycle frame including upward force exerted by the annular chain guide against the chain. The motion of the annular chain guide during a down-shift is exactly opposite whereby the annular chain guide exerts a pulling down force against the chain.

Front derailleur with annular chain guide, bicycle and method of operation

A front bicycle derailleur which utilizes a substantially annular chain guide for engagement and disengagement of the bicycle chain with multiple chain rings of a crankset. The annular chain guide provides an opening for the bicycle chain to pass through. The opening is sized only slightly larger than the cross section of the bicycle chain and is smooth and rounded along the inner surfaces that come in contact with the bicycle chain. The relatively small opening allows for precise and efficient positioning of the bicycle chain. The annular chain guide also serves to maintain the position of the bicycle chain to prevent derailment or unwanted shifting of the bicycle chain during pedaling.
