An exemplary system includes a GUI that displays a window to the user, and displays data element icons within the window representing an initial set of data elements from the data collection. Visual properties of the data element icons indicate the relevance of the data elements in the initial set to the data collection. The GUI receives input from the user selecting a data element icon within the window. Selection of the data element icon assigns a corresponding data element in the initial set as an initial anchor set. The GUI displays another window to the user, displays an anchor icon for the initial anchor set, and displays the data element icons representing a relevant set of data elements. Visual properties of the data element icons indicate the relevance of the data elements in the relevant set to the initial anchor set.

A collaborative software-defined networking (SDN) based virtual private network (VPN) communication method includes: establishing, at a wireless access point, a private wireless local area network (WLAN) slice within a first wireless network in response to a request from a first user, wireless resources for the first wireless network being provided by the wireless access point; creating a VPN connection between the private WLAN slice and a second network; granting users access to the private WLAN slice and the VPN connection between the private WLAN slice and the second network; and routing traffic between the users granted access to the private WLAN slice and the VPN connection without transmission of the traffic to the second network through the VPN connection.

A capability for controlling access by a mobile device to venue-related items associated with a venue is presented. A server may be configured to detect a presence of the mobile device at the venue and send a venue token toward the mobile device based on detection of the presence of the mobile device at the venue, where the venue token includes an indication of a venue-related item that the mobile device is permitted to access independent of a location of the mobile device. A mobile device may be configured to receive a venue token based on a presence of the mobile device at the venue where the venue token includes an indication of a venue-related item that the mobile device is permitted to access independent of a location of the mobile device, and send a request for the venue-related item toward a server based on the venue token.

Controlling access to venue-related content, applications, and services

A contextual language learning capability is disclosed. The contextual language learning capability is configured to enable an end user to use knowledge of a first language to learn a second language. The contextual language learning capability is configured to modify source content (in which content is provided in the first language) to form modified content (including a combination of content in the first language and content in the second language). The source content is processed to replace at least a portion of the content provided in the first language with corresponding content provided in the second language, thereby producing the modified content. The modified content is presented to the end user for use in learning the second language. The replacement of a subset of the source content in the first language with corresponding content in the second language gives context to the content in the second language, thereby giving the end user an understandable context for the content provided in the second language. This increases the likelihood that the end user will be able to understand and, thus, learn, the second language.

Automated word substitution for contextual language learning

The present invention includes an optical amplifier and method for reducing the impact of transient events within an optical transmission system. Specifically, a positive transient power or amplifier setting adjustment limit is applied based upon a number of active channels or a current 'steady state' operating condition. This adjustment limit is described in terms of a number of channels to be amplified. By controlling the adjustment limit in this manner, automatic control of the amplifier is provided for a loss of channel condition as well as for the addition of a single or few channel condition. If a larger positive transient occurs, the control will not adjust the power limit, and the positive transient power will therefore be suppressed.

An example method includes receiving power measurements for a plurality of optical channels. Deviation measurements representing a difference between respective power measurements and corresponding power targets for the plurality of optical channels are created. Correctable deviations for the plurality of optical channels are determined based on the deviation measurements. The correctable deviations may be determined by projecting the measured deviations into a space that defines Raman gain profiles achievable with a set of channels and pumps. Pump settings for a plurality of pumps are determining based upon the correctable deviations for each channel by solving an optimization problem. The pump setting so determined may be applied to the plurality of pumps.

Method and apparatus of stored energy management in battery powered vehicles

In one embodiment, a control method, according to which a cascade of control messages is propagated between nodes of an optically transparent network, with each message being sent from a node to an adjacent downstream node to inform the latter about a control operation scheduled to be performed at the message-sending node and/or an upstream node that impacts an optical communication signal received at that downstream node. The cascade of control messages effectively creates an ad hoc control domain, in which control operations performed at various nodes of that domain can be coordinated to reduce unfavorable interactions between those control operations. By repeatedly propagating appropriate cascades of control messages through the network, control domains can be changed dynamically and adaptively to reflect any changes to the network topology, equipment, and/or traffic distribution.

Coordination of control operations in an optical network

Optical amplifier transient control methods and apparatus which limit the extent of cumulative transient gain errors in the rapid control of multiple optical amplifiers in a communication system. In an exemplary embodiment, if the input power to an optical amplifier drops below a predetermined threshold, the gain of the amplifier is set to clamp the output power of the amplifier to its initial level less the threshold, thereby preventing the continuous growth of gain error. This is based on the assumption that once the input power goes below the threshold, it should no longer go above the threshold until the transient condition is corrected. The present invention can operate to handle down-as well as up-transient events and is not amplifier technology dependent.

Optical amplifier transient control with gain error limits

A channel-growth plan for an optical transmission system selects channels such that the transients that result in the channels that survive a network failure, such as an upstream fiber cut, are either minimized or effectively handled by some transient-control technique. In one embodiment, the growth plan may try to keep post-transient surviving channel total power gain equal to the pre-transient total power gain. Alternatively, the growth plan may try to distribute the surviving channels uniformly over the pre-transient channel-frequency range. Other manifestations are to keep (1) the average power of the surviving channels substantially equal to the average power of the pre-transient channels or (2) the average power of the post-transient surviving channels substantially equal to the power level of a specified channel. Transient-control can be balanced with conventional low-cost and high-performance goals to provide an effective hybrid channel-growth plan.

Transient-based channel growth for optical transmission systems

In an optical transmission system, operations of certain elements are adjusted in an individualized manner after detecting a change in the total optical power level corresponding to multiple optical channels in a link of the system in order to control transients in those channels. For example, in response to a sudden drop in the number of channels resulting from a fiber cut, the power levels of the optical pumps in a Raman amplifier in an OADM are adjusted to reduce transient gain errors in the surviving channels, where the adjustment to the pump power level for each different optical pump is a function of both the detected change in the total optical power level and at least one specified coefficient for that particular optical pump, in order to handle non-linearities in the response of the Raman amplifier to the sudden drop in the number of optical channels.

Transient control in optical transmission systems

A method and apparatus for controlling the pump powers of a broadband DWDM optical system using Raman amplification which determines pump settings that are advantageously directed to minimizing the peak-to-peak ripple of the channel powers with respect to a given per-channel target. The illustrative method and apparatus first formulates a linear programming optimization problem, and then solves the formulated linear program in order to derive a new set of pump powers to be applied to the Raman amplification pumps. In accordance with the principles of the invention, the formulated linear programming optimization problem advantageously includes one or more 'virtual' channels in addition to the actual channels used in the optical transmission system. The linear program may be solved with use of any conventional linear programming solution technique, such as, for example, the simplex method.

Method and apparatus for controlling pump powers of broadband Raman amplifiers in optical transmission systems incorporating virtual channels to reduce noise

The process time required for fluorine doping of porous silica bodies to produce fluorine doped preforms for the manufacture of depressed index optical fibers is reduced by separating the doping step into a predeposit step, where &ldquo;excess&rdquo; fluorine is deposited on the silica particles, and a drive-in step where atomic fluorine is distributed into the silica particles. The drive-in step is conveniently combined with the sintering or consolidation step to further enhance the efficiency of the doping process.

Manufacture of depressed index optical fibers

A new type of multimode fiber is provided, capable of being constructed without the need for chemical doping. The fiber contains a core region comprising a first material and one or more axially oriented elements disposed in the first material. The axially oriented elements (which typically extend throughout the length of the fiber) are configured to provide a graded effective refractive index profile or to provide more focused interaction with selected modes. The fiber further contains a cladding region surrounding the core region, where the cladding region exhibits a refractive index less than the effective refractive index of the portion of the core immediately adjacent the cladding region, i.e., there exists an index step at the core/cladding interface.
