A brake shoe assembly is formed by precision stamping a net shaped web blank having a series of tabs projecting outward therefrom and stamping a corresponding table member provided with tab receiving apertures and bending the table member into a semi-cylindrical segment. The web blank and the table are assembled causing the web tabs and table apertures to be interlocked securely locating the parts temporarily prior to the cooperating tabs and apertures being permanently joined together using a hot staking process without any portion thereof extending substantially beyond the outer semi-cylindrical surface of the table.

Brake shoe assembly formed using hot staking method

A brake shoe assembly is formed by precision stamping a net shaped web blank out of steel forming a series of tabs projecting outward therefrom, stamping a corresponding table member provided with tab receiving apertures, and bending the table member into a semi-cylindrical segment. The web blank and the table are assembled causing the web tabs and table apertures to be interlocked securely locating the parts temporarily together. The cooperating tabs and projections are then permanently joined together using a hot staking process which quickly heats, radially deforms and self quenches the tab to metallurgically strength the joint.

Brake shoe assembly and method of forming

A generally straight elongated lever tool is insertable through the notch between the ribs in the end of a heavy duty truck brake shoe. A notch in the end of the tool engages the wire between the coils of the return spring when the tool is inserted between the shoe ribs at the end of the shoe. The tool is fulcrummed about the end of the brake actuating S-cam or roller for stretching the spring. One side of the notched end of the tool is concave or cupped to contact one of the spring coils for direct axial lift or stretch to cause the spring end hook to snap over an anchor pin up installation. The opposite side of the notched end of the tool surface is inclined for spring removal such that upon reversed insertion of the tool with the inclined surface against the spring coil and fulcrumming about the S-cam or roller, the coil is deflected laterally upon stretching of the spring to cause the end hook to clear the anchor pin upon relaxation of the spring.

A replaceable roller insert is provided for supporting a cam roller follower within roller supports acting against a cam element moving at least one brake shoe inward and outward relative to a brake drum where the roller insert is easily replaced by removing a worn roller insert and mounting a replacement roller insert to the brake shoe web.

A roller follower (12) and bracket (20) combination for use in a rotary cam type brake shoe assembly (100) is provided in which bracket (20) is supported on a web (2) of a brake shoe in such a manner that, when a free-end (27) of bracket (20) is inserted into an opening (26) in a trunnion (24) of a pin (11) that supports roller follower (12) for rotation, bracket (20) is operative to prevent roller follower support pin (11) from being rotated by the cam to lessen noise heretofor created by the rotation of trunnion (24) against web (2).
