An occupant sensing apparatus for controlling operating characteristics of a vehicle's safety restraint system is provided. The apparatus has a first proximity sensor emitting a field in a first direction and generating a first output signal indicative of the object and a second proximity sensor emitting a second field in a second direction that is substantially towards the field in the first direction and generating a second output signal indicative of the object. A controller receives the first and second output signals and generates a control signal that is used to control the operating characteristics of the vehicle's safety restraint system.

Occupant presence and position sensing system

A driver side air bag module (50, 50', 50') formed of an air bag cover (2), mounting plate (10), inflator (22), and cushion (12). The driver side air bag module cover (2) includes a relatively flexible horn actuation area (4) which is depressible from its upper surface (6) by a driver. A primarily airtight chamber (18) can be found inside the air bag module (50) being coupled to a sensor (14) for sensing changes in pressure and actuating a horn (32).

Air bag module with remote switch

A seat belt retractor which is capable of functioning in either an ALR and ELR mode including a mode switching mechanism to convert the retractor between ELR to ALR modes of operation. A sensor capable of detecting which mode the retractor is in and accordingly provide a signal that modifies the operation of other devices of a safety restraint system.

System for modifying the output of a component of a safety restraint

A seat belt restraint system for use by a child and an adult comprising: a three-point seat belt restraint system (20) having an additional web guide (50) to lower one of the restraint points to permit a shoulder belt to extend across the upper torso of a child.
