A gravel packing apparatus includes a base pipe defining an interior fluid conduit, the base pipe having a production section configured to provide fluid communication between an exterior of the base pipe and an interior of the base pipe, the base pipe having a blank section. The apparatus also includes a screen surrounding the production section, the screen in fluid communication with an annular region of a borehole and configured to prevent particulate matter from passing therethrough, and a filtration assembly disposed proximate to the blank section, the filtration assembly including a fluid passage extending between an exterior of the blank section and an interior of the blank section.

Systems and methods for downhole gravel packing operations. The systems include a pressure activated fluid diverter and a plurality of inflow control devices attached to the pressure activated fluid diverter to form a section of a string. Methods and systems for packing extended reach wells using inflow control devices

A method for deploying a sand screen in a borehole penetrating the earth includes: disposing the sand screen in an unexpanded form in the borehole, the sand screen at least partially surrounding a base-pipe; and activating the sand screen in the unexpanded form by applying at least one of an activation fluid and heat to the sand screen causing the sand screen to expand into an expanded form. The method further includes: conveying a downhole tool through the base-pipe, the downhole tool being configured to sense a property derived from at least one of expansion and non-expansion of the sand screen as a function of distance into the borehole to provide sensed data as a function of distance into the borehole; and identifying one of an expanded state and an unexpanded state of the sand screen using the sensed data as a function of distance into the borehole.

Monitoring expandable screen deployment in highly deviated wells in open hole environment

A subsurface system includes a tubular having an opening. A filtration media is mounted about the tubular over the opening. The filtration media includes a selectively expandable outer surface positioned over the opening. The selectively expandable outer surface includes one or more selectively expandable openings. The one or more selectively expandable openings transition from a first dimension to a second dimension upon expansion of the selectively expandable outer surface.

Apparatus and method for installing tracer material in downhole screens

A method of passing downhole fluids through a screen assembly mounted to a tubular run into a well bore. The screen assembly has a plurality of screen sections arranged at a resource production zone between a first swellable member and a second swellable member. The method includes passing a fluid through an annular screen of the plurality of screen sections into the tubular. At least a portion of the fluid includes particulate matter. Particulate matter is accumulated at the annular screen. Particulate matter is detected in the fluid. The fluid passes into one or more of a plurality of inner screen compartments provided on an inner tubular member radially inwardly spaced from the tubular, and the fluid is filtered through an erosion resistant annular screen of one or more of the plurality of inner screen compartments.

Screen assembly for a resource exploration system

A screen assembly includes a tubular having a first end, a second end, and an intermediate portion including an outer surface provided with a plurality of openings extending therebetween. At least one screen arranged at the plurality of openings. At least two deformable members are mounted to the tubular between the first end and the second end. The at least two deformable members are selectively radially outwardly expandable relative to the at least one screen forming a plurality of screen compartments on the tubular, the plurality of screen compartments being substantially fluidically isolated from one another externally of the tubular.

A screen connection area assembly configured to mount between adjacent sand screens of a gravel pack string including a body attachable to a screen connection area between two adjacent sand screens of the gravel pack string, the body configured to displace fluid and present a radial dimension between about 75% and 100% of a radial dimension of the adjacent sand screens. Screen connection area assembly for gravel pack and method

A well fluid particle screen assembly includes a base pipe having first and second pipe segments. First and second sets of perforations are located in sidewalls of the first and second pipe segments. First and second screens are mounted around the first and second pipe segments. A second pipe segment valve mounted to the second pipe segment has a closed position blocking well fluid flow through the second set of perforations. The second pipe segment valve has a pressure area acted on by a well fluid pressure differential. When reaching a threshold, the pressure differential causes the second pipe segment valve to move from the closed position to an open position. A retainer retains the second pipe segment valve in the closed position until the threshold is reached.

Intake screen assembly for submersible well pump

A gravel pack of screen sections separated by blank pipe is accomplished with sleeves around the blank sections that have a smaller run in dimension to allow the gravel to get past the sleeves during the gravel packing. When the gravel packing is complete the sleeves swell or otherwise enlarge to fill the voids where no or insufficient amount of gravel has been deposited. The presence of the enlarged sleeves prevents settling or shifting of the gravel pack away from the screens because voids that would otherwise have been there are filled with the enlarged sleeves. This is more of an issue in wells that are closer to vertical than horizontal.

Swelling sleeve method to prevent gravel pack movement into voids adjacent screen connections and exposing screen portions

An isolation method is described for gravel packed zones separated by at least one packer and having an auxiliary conduit passing through the packer into adjacent zones. The conduit includes at least one each of a shunt tube, flow housing, annular space, and isolation valve housing. The flow housing, the annular space, and the isolation valve housing are all annular and formed between two concentric pipes. The method includes running in an assembly of screens isolated by at least one packer with at least one auxiliary conduit extending into adjacent zones defined by the packer when the packer is subsequently set. The method also includes closing flow in said conduit to prevent flow into shunt tubes during production based on creating a flow barrier in the annular space, the flow housing, or the isolation valve housing, the shunt tubes supplying slurry through the auxiliary conduit prior to the production.
