A blade assembly including an outboard blade segment is provided. The outboard blade segment includes an outboard blade shell, first and second outboard bulkheads situated within the outboard blade shell, and an outer box supported by and aligned by the outboard bulkheads. The blade assembly also includes an inboard blade segment including an inboard blade shell, first and second inboard bulkheads situated within the inboard blade shell, and an inner box supported by and aligned by the inboard bulkheads. Further, the inner and the outer boxes are tapered to facilitate insertion of the inner box into the outer box and coupling of the inner and outer boxes.

System and method for joining turbine blades

A method facilitates reducing stress in a turbine bucket including a metallic base metal. The method comprises providing a turbine bucket including at least one pocket formed therein, and filling at least one pocket defined in the bucket with a polymer composite having continuous fibers oriented in a resin matrix, such that the fibers have an orientation determined in accordance with a pre-selected frequency tuning of the bucket.

Methods and apparatus for reducing stress in turbine buckets

A method for making a turbine blade includes providing a bucket in the turbine blade with a plurality of window pockets passing all the way through a wall of the bucket, positioning the window pockets in regions minimizing or at least reducing stress concentrations on the window pockets, and casting a composite comprising a resin matrix and layers of a fabric material in the bucket.

Methods and apparatus for mechanical retainment of non-metallic fillers in pockets

A method of assembling a turbine bucket is provided. The bucket includes a dovetail portion, an airfoil portion, and a root that extends between the airfoil portion and the dovetail portion. The turbine bucket includes a pressure side and a suction side that are connected together at a leading edge and a trailing edge. The method includes forming at least one pocket within the turbine bucket, such that the pocket is formed within the pressure side. The method also includes forming at least one pin within the at least one pocket.

Methods and apparatus for assembling a steam turbine bucket

To address certain deficiencies of carbon fiber material as a filler in a hybrid blade, a glass composite layer is provided as a barrier layer between a carbon fiber resin filler and the metallic main body of the blade. The glass composite layer also advantageously provides a gradient in thermal expansion between the carbon fiber composite and the body of the blade (steel) to reduce interfacial residual stress.
