Instruments and methods for preparing an intervertebral space for receiving an implant. An adjustable trial implant has an adjustable stop mechanism having a stop member connected thereto to vary the distance that a body portion of the trial implant can move into the intervertebral space. Cutting tools for forming cutouts in the adjacent vertebrae use the trial implant and/or a guide to position a cutting tool which may be a burr or a chisel. The chisel cutting tool can be moveable relative to a selected trial implant or the chisel cutting tools can be fixed onto a trial implant shaped body portion.

Instruments and method for preparing an intervertebral space for receiving an artificial disc implant

The invention relates to the preparation of an intervertebral space with a trial implant (), the insertion of an implant (), the inserters (), and the method for feeding and inserting the implant () by means of an oblique anterior approach. In the novel improved method, the associated instruments () for inserting an implant () into an intervertebral space, in particular for the lumbar spine at an oblique anterior angle of 45&#xb0; was developed, the left side of the body being preferred for insertion of the implant (). Either the implant () can be inserted all in one, or first the upper part () and lower parts () and then the inlay () may be inserted. By insertion by means of the left oblique anterior approach at 45&#xb0;, optimum utilization of the area of the intervertebral space is ensured (footprint), and better retention of the implant is guaranteed by the exact chiselling at an angle of 90&#xb0; normal to the respective intervertebral surface.

System and method for an intervertebral implant

A device for dimensioning a circumference of a cavity includes a body with a lumen and a distal aperture. The device also includes a longitudinal member extending through the lumen with a distal end and a proximal end. The longitudinal member is capable of slidable movement through the body between retracted and advanced positions. The device also includes a flexible member adapted to conform to a circumference of a cavity contained, e.g., in an intervertebral disc space. The flexible member is operatively connected to a longitudinal member such that upon retraction of the longitudinal member the flexible member retracts into the lumen. When the longitudinal member is moved toward the advanced position, the flexible member is advanced out of the lumen and expands to conform to a dimension which approximates the circumference of the cavity. An apparatus is provided which includes a device for dimensioning a circumference of a cavity and an access member for facilitating conduction of the device to a surgical site, the device adapted and configured to fit within the access member. A kit is provided which includes a working tube incorporating a vertebral distractor, a spreader for assisting and maintaining the vertebral distractor in a distracted configuration, a closing tube for maintaining the working tube in a closed configuration, and a cavity circumference measuring device.

Apparatus for dimensioning circumference of cavity for introduction of a prosthetic implant

A method and apparatus for customizing an intervertebral implant includes the initial step of obtaining a 3D anatomy of a series of vertebrae including an abnormal vertebra in a computer. The 3D anatomy of the series is then repositioned in the computer to eliminate the deformity caused by the abnormal vertebra. It is next determined whether a superior or inferior surface of the abnormal vertebra is an abnormal surface which causes the deformity, whereby an approximate gap between the abnormal surface and a desired normal surface is determined. Using that gap determination, a custom implant is constructed to engage the abnormal surface and fill the determined gap. Thus, when the implant is implanted between the abnormal surface and an adjacent surface of an adjacent vertebrae, the deformity is substantially compensated for. The implant may have articulation between the endplates to allow relative movement therebetween.

Customizing an intervertebral implant

Instruments and methods for inserting an intervertebral implant. Insertion of the implant is accomplished by grasping the implant between the arms of an insertion instrument having arms which separate from each other and close against each other onto the implant, such that the ends of the arms of the insertion instrument engage recesses of the implant. A spacer may be provided between the arms of the insertion instrument to help position the implant while held by the arms.

Instruments and method for inserting an intervertebral implant

An instrument and method are disclosed for inserting an artificial intervertebral disc implant having upper and lower parts and a pivot element therebetween into an intervertebral space. The instrument has a mounting structure, and an elongated upper arm and elongated lower arms, the arms being pivotally attached to the mounting structure. A distractor separates the upper and lower arms, and hence the upper and lower parts, when moving along the arms so as to permit insertion of the pivot element. The distractor includes a fork arm that extends beyond a main body thereof to engage and support with heads thereof a facing surface of the upper and/or lower part during and following separation of the parts.
