Antenna units, antenna systems and polarizing systems provide polarization diversity to leaky-wave antennas. An antenna unit comprises a rat-race coupler having a summation port, a difference port and two output ports. Each one of a pair of composite right/left-handed (CRLH) leaky-wave antennas (LWA) is connected at one end to a respective one of the output ports of the rat-race coupler. An inductive stub is implemented between the CRLH LWAs for connecting the CRLH LWAs to a grounded via. Various polarizations are obtained by injecting a radio-frequency (RF) signal in the summation or difference port of the rat-race coupler, or in both ports. System variants include various devices and assemblies for injecting RF signals in the antenna unit. One such variant includes a polarizing system having a switched matrix for directing a signal according to various intended polarizations.

Polarization-diverse antennas and systems

The present system relates to radiation pattern control. More particularly, the present system is adapted for controlling a radiation pattern of a directional antenna. The system comprises a sample collection unit, a power angular spectrum estimation unit and a control unit. The sample collection unit is adapted for collecting a plurality of samples of a signal with a current radiation pattern and a plurality of samples of the signal with different radiation patterns. The power angular spectrum estimation unit is adapted for estimating a preliminary spectrum of the signal based on the collected plurality of samples with the current radiation pattern and for estimating an optimized spectrum of the signal based on the collected plurality of samples with different radiation patterns. Then, the control unit sets the radiation pattern of the directional antenna to the estimated optimized spectrum.

The present device and method improve radiation efficiency of a leaky wave antenna. The device and method collect non-radiated power signal from the leaky wave antenna, perform a passive operation on the non-radiated power signal to obtain a modified power signal, and radiate the modified power signal.

Device and method for improving leaky wave antenna radiation efficiency

The present invention relates to a dynamic radiation pattern diversity antenna system comprising a transmission line, a plurality of varactor diodes, and a radiation pattern control unit. The transmission line defines a plurality of unit cells. Each varactor diode is electrically connected to a corresponding unit cell. The radiation pattern control unit is electrically connected to each of the plurality of varactor diodes, and controls the electrical actuation thereof. Upon electrical actuation of the varactor diodes, each unit cell radiates at an angle corresponding to a voltage applied to the corresponding varactor diode.

Dynamic radiation pattern antenna system

High-frequency couplers and coupling techniques are described utilizing artificial composite right/left-handed transmission line (CRLH-TL). Three specific forms of couplers are described; (1) a coupled-line backward coupler is described with arbitrary tight/loose coupling and broad bandwidth; (2) a compact enhanced-bandwidth hybrid ring coupler is described with increased bandwidth and decreased size; and (3) a dual-band branch-line coupler that is not limited to a harmonic relation between the bands. These variations are preferably implemented in a microstrip fabrication process and may use lumped-element components. The couplers and coupling techniques are directed at increasing the utility while decreasing the size of high-frequency couplers, and are suitable for use with separate coupler or couplers integrated within integrated devices.

Composite right/left (CRLH) couplers

The present invention relates to a dynamic radiation pattern antenna system comprising a plurality of antenna units, a control unit and an electronic interface. The plurality of antenna units has electronically controllable radiation patterns. The control unit is dynamically controlling the radiation pattern of the plurality of antenna units and the electronic interface connects the plurality of antenna units to the control unit.

A high frequency resonator circuit and method of fabrication is described which has a resonant frequency independent of physical resonator dimensions. The resonator operates in a zeroeth-order mode on a composite right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission line (TL). The LH wave properties of the CRLH-TL contributing anti-parallel phase and group velocities. In one variation, the unit cells are formed from microstrip techniques, preferably creating alternating interdigitated capacitors and stub inductors. The resonant wavelength of the resonator is dependent on the electrical characteristics of the unit cells and not the physical size of the resonator in relation to the desired resonant wavelength. The resonator is created with at least 1.5 unit cells and the Q of the resonator is substantially independent of the number of unit cells utilized. The resonator circuit is particularly well suited for reducing resonator size, and allows resonators of various wavelengths to be fabricated within a fixed board area.
