Radar frequency range signals (e.g., 1 to 100 gigahertz) are often generated by upconverting a reference frequency to a transmission frequency, and a received signal may be downconverted to analyze information encoded on the transmission via modulation. Modulation may be achieved via a fractional frequency divider in a phase-locked loop, but fractional spurs may reduce the signal-to-noise ratio. Additionally, the ramp slope may vary due to phase-locked loop momentum. Instead, a clock generator may generate clock signals for a digital front end comprising a digital signal modulator that generates modulated digital values comprising quadrature representations of a radar modulation signal, which are encoded by a radiofrequency digital-to-analog converter (RF-DAC). The RF-DAC analog signal may be upconverted to a radar frequency and transmitted. A receiver may receive, downconvert, and analyze a reflection of the radar transmission, e.g., to perform range detection based on a frequency ramp encoded by the radar transmission.

A radar system includes a local oscillator for generating a local oscillator signal, transmission channels, and a reception channel. The transmission channels are designed to generate and output RF radar signals based on the local oscillator signal The transmission channels have phase shifters for setting the phase of the RF radar signals. The reception channel is designed to receive an RF signal and to convert it into a baseband signal by using the local oscillator signal supplied thereto. A method includes operating the local oscillator in a CW mode, setting a specific combination of phase shifts for the phase shifters of the transmission channels, altering the phase of the local oscillator signal supplied to the reception channel or of the phase shifts of the phase shifters by a phase offset, and ascertaining that phase offset for which the baseband signal at least approximately assumes a maximum.

One embodiment of the present invention relates to a test signal generator configured to generate a single sideband (SSB) test signal that is used for testing components of one or more receiver chains to identify errors in the receiver chains. In one embodiment, the circuit comprises a SSB signal generator configured to generate an IQ baseband signal comprising a sequence of constellation points corresponding to the SSB test signal. The constellation points are modulated onto a high frequency local oscillator signal to generate the SSB test signal, which is inserted into a reception path of a receiver at a test signal injection point. The reception path comprises a mixer configured to mix the SSB test signal with the local oscillator signal to generate a down-converted, intermediate frequency output signal. The output signal may be analyzed to determine errors in the reception path.
