A coated tool has a substrate and a hard material coating deposited on the substrate. The hard material coating has a layer structure in the following order, starting from the substrate: a titanium nitride layer, a titanium boron nitride transition layer, and a titanium diboride layer. The titanium boron nitride transition layer has a boron content that increases from the titanium nitride layer in the direction of the titanium diboride layer. The boron content does not exceed 15 at %.

Coated tool

A process for producing a hard material layer on a substrate. A multilayer coating system is applied to the substrate by alternate deposition of CrTaN and AlTiN by way of physical vapor deposition (PVD). The CrTaN and/or the AlTiN are preferably deposited from a composite target.

Method for producing a hard material layer on a substrate, hard material layer, machining tool and coating source

A process for producing a hard material layer on a substrate includes depositing a TiCNB hard material layer by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) from a gas system including a titanium source, a boron source, at least one nitrogen source and at least one carbon source, in which the carbon source includes an alkane having at least two carbon atoms, an alkene or an alkyne. A cutting tool includes a substrate to which a TiCNB hard material layer has been applied, in which a ratio of carbon atoms (C) to nitrogen atoms (N) in the TiCxNyB1-x-y system deposited on the substrate is 0.70&#x2266;X&#x2266;1.0, preferably 0.75&#x2266;X&#x2266;0.85, and a polished section through the substrate and the hard material layer is substantially free of an eta phase following Murakami etching.

Method for producing a hard material layer on a substrate, hard material layer and cutting tool

A cutting tool for metal material processing has a hard metal body and a multi-layer coating applied to the hard metal body in at least one surface area. The multi-layer coating includes the following, sequentially in direction from the hard metal body to the surface of the cutting tool: at least one layer TiCN, where x+y=1, x&#x2267;0, y&#x3e;0; at least one layer TiCNO, where x+y+z=1, 0&#x2266;z&#x2266;0.03 and 0.5&#x2266;x&#x2266;0.85; at least one layer TiN, or TiCN, where 0.2&#x2266;x&#x2266;0.8 and x+y=1, or TiNB, where 0.0001&#x2266;v&#x2266;0.05 and y+v=1; at least one layer: TiNBO, where y+v+z=1 and 0.0001&#x2266;v&#x2266;0.05 and 0.01&#x2266;z&#x2266;0.6, or TiCNO, where x+y+z=1 and 0&#x2266;y&#x2266;0.5 and 0.01&#x2266;z&#x2266;0.6; and at least one outer layer &#x3ba;-AlO. The at least one layer TiCNOhas a texture in the direction having a texture coefficient TC=1.3.
