Methods and apparatus for performing media/device sensitive processing of messages stored in unified multimedia and plain text mailboxes

The invention provides the user of a unified messaging mailbox with efficient, intelligent, media and device sensitive methods and apparatus to access and process (e.g., read, listen, forward, and search) messages. The invention introduces media conversion capabilities to selectively treat multimedia messages and message attachments so that they can be efficiently handled by mobile devices like PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants), pagers, or phone devices (with or without a text display feature). Furthermore, the invention introduces message content analysis capabilities that will recognize linguistic relationships between messages regardless of the media type. The invention also describes the ability to present these linguistic relationships along with the standard messaging relationships (Message arrival time, subject, sender, etc.). Still further, the invention introduces a message referencing option that allows simpler message selection from certain devices.

Methods and apparatus for accessing and processing multimedia messages stored in a unified multimedia mailbox

A system and a method for quantitatively measuring voice transmission quality within a voice-over-data-network such as a telephony-enabled LAN utilize speech recognition to measure the quality of voice transmission. A first aspect of the invention involves determining the suitability of the LAN for voice communications. A voice sample is selected by a first terminal and is transmitted to a second terminal on the LAN a number of times. The first terminal introduces an incrementally larger quantity of noise into each transmission of the voice packet. The second terminal performs speech recognition for each successively received voice sample and determines the accuracy for each speech recognition session. The amount of noise which drops the speech recognition accuracy below a threshold level provides a measure of the suitability of the LAN for voice communications. During normal operation of the LAN, speech recognition accuracy tests are performed between various endpoints to monitor voice transmission quality.

Apparatus and method for quantitative measurement of voice quality in packet network environments

A method and system for supporting a real-time communication on an integrated packet-based network involve accumulating information about the communication, referred to as signature data, while the communication is being setup and/or is in progress and storing the signature data in a database that is openly accessible to any applications that are connected to the network. Once signature data regarding an active real-time communication is accumulated, portions of the signature data may be utilized to further process the active real-time communication. A method and system for personalized multimedia messaging include multiple communication mode interfaces which enable the system to communicate with multiple types of communication devices. Caller profiles are configured for preselected callers such that each caller profile includes at least one caller identifier representative of data patterns in incoming. calls received over the communication modes. The caller profiles are selectively configured to include personalized messages intended for a subset of the preselected callers and can also include caller identity verification data. A caller identification subsystem monitors the communication modes for incoming calls which include the data patterns. Upon detecting one of the data patterns, a processor accesses a corresponding caller profile and determines if the caller profile includes a personalized message. If a personalized message includes confidential subject matter, the processor can transmit a caller identity verification request to the incoming caller. The processor compares received caller identity verification data to stored caller identity verification data. If the received verification data matches the stored verification data, the messaging system transmits the personalized message to the caller. If no personalized message is associated with the caller profile, a general message is transmitted to the caller, which might include a greeting that directs the caller to leave a message. In a preferred embodiment, the personalized messaging system is included in an IVR system which enables callers to interface with the IVR system through multiple different communication modes based on the same set of personalized caller preferences.

A method and system for enabling call notification for a user of a telephonic device, such as a telephone, computer or video conference system, include forming a notification message having content-specific information relating to the subject matter of interest to the calling party. Preferably, the notification message also includes caller identification. In one embodiment, the application of the method is restricted to call-waiting circumstances, but this is not critical. The content-specific information is acquired using automated processes, such as interactive voice recognition. Voice responses are converted to a proper text format for presentation on a display of the target telephonic device. The display of the notification message presents the content-specific information in a nonintrusive manner. The called party is thereby able to form an informed decision as to whether to answer the incoming call, interrupt an ongoing call, or forward the call and/or the notification message to a mailbox.

The present invention relates to a call forwarding system for forwarding telephone calls to a target telephone not having a direct dial number. The call forwarding system includes an intelligent forwarding unit for storing a forwarding direct dial number and the extension number for accessing the target telephone and for connecting the received forwarded call to the target telephone, a voice response unit including a DTMF decoder for receiving the forwarded telephone call and for decoding the extension number of the target telephone.
