An engine braking system includes an exhaust control path between an engine cylinder and an exhaust discharge path. A relief valve has a valve element located within the path, the valve element operable between a closed position to close the exhaust control path, corresponding to an engine operating condition, and an open position to open the exhaust control path, corresponding to an engine-braking condition. A spring urges the valve element toward the closed position. A retainer is arranged to be positioned in two operating positions, a first operating position which prevents opening of the valve element and a second operating position which allows opening of the valve element. An actuator wedge is operable to move between a first position and a second position to move the retainer between the first and second operating positions.

A breather system for a crankcase of an internal combustion engine includes a gas compressor configured to elevate the pressure of crankcase blow-by gas. At least one gas-oil separator receives gas with entrained oil from the compressor, separates oil from the gas and discharges cleaned gas. The oil is re-circulated back to the crankcase. The cleaned gas is either discharged through the engine exhaust system or re-circulated back into the engine combustion air intake. A bypass conduit allows cleaned gas to be re-circulated from the gas-oil separator outlet to the compressor inlet to balance the blow-by production with the capacity of the compressor.

Variable open-closed crankcase breather system for blow-by gas

An internal combustion engine has one or more engine cylinders () within which fuel is combusted and a pair of cylinder valves () spring-biased () closed but open in unison to place the respective cylinder in flow communication with one of an intake and an exhaust. A bridge () bridges ends of the pair external to the cylinder and has a spherically concave depression () in a face that is opposite a face that bears against the ends of the pair. The depression is located intermediate locations at which the ends of the pair bear against the bridge. A pivot foot () has a spherically convex surface () seated with substantial conformity in the depression and a flat surface () opposite the spherically convex surface. The flat surface of the pivot foot abuts a flat surface () of a rocker () that when rocked acts through the pivot foot and bridge to open the respective pair of valves.
