A photographic element comprising a support bearing one or more silver halide emulsions at least one of which comprises at least 50% silver chloride in association with one or more image dye-forming couplers and one or more DI(A)R couplers of formulae I or II:

The invention provides a photographic element comprising a silver halide emulsion layer having associated therewith an image dye-forming coupler of formula (I): ##STR1## wherein X is H or a coupling-off group, R is H; or R, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are the same or different and are coupler-modifying functional groups (with the provisos that (a) the moiety N(R.sub.1)COR.sub.2 may not be a carbamate, ureido or imido and (b) R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 may not both be phenyl or substituted phenyl); or R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 taken together with the nitrogen atom and the carbonyl group form a 5-10 membered heterocyclic ring which may contain one or more further heteroatoms selected from N, O and S, said heterocyclic ring being unsubstituted or substituted with one or more coupler-modifying functional groups, with the proviso that the ring is not a cyclic carbamate, ureido or imido; and wherein the coupler forms a dye with a peak absorption less than 565 nm.

Silver halide photographic element comprising image dye-forming couplers

The invention provides a light sensitive photographic silver halide emulsion layer having associated therewith a magenta coupler having formula I: ##STR1## wherein: R represents a ballasted monosubstituted amino group which enables the coupler to form, upon development with 4-amino-3-methyl-N-ethyl-N-(2-hydroxyethyl)aniline sulfate developing agent, a magenta dye having a wavelength of maximum absorbance of 545 nm or greater; and

The combination of a magenta dye image-forming coupler, such as a phenylpyrazolone, with a substituted phenol in a photographic material provides an enhancement in the light stability of the resultant magenta image dye. The phenol has the formula (I): ##STR1## wherein each R is the same or different and is an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, halogen, cyano, SO.sub.2 R.sup.1, SO.sub.2 NHR.sup.1, NHSO.sub.2 R.sup.1 or COOR.sup.1 group, in which R.sup.1 is an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl or aryl group and n is from 1 to 5. The phenol may totally or partially replace the conventional coupler solvent. The combination is useful in single colour or multi-colour photographic silver halide emulsion materials and processes.
