A bone implant for implantation into bone tissue includes a metallic material having a surface that is covered by an oxide layer wherein the oxide layer has a thickness within the range of from 2 to 100 nm and includes strontium ions homogenously dispersed in the oxide layer. The oxide layer is a metal oxide layer formed from the metallic surface of the implant. The local administration of strontium ions in bone tissue has been found to improve the bone formation and bone mass upon implantation of a bone tissue implant in the bone tissue.

The present invention is based on that local administration of strontium ions in bone tissue has been found to improve the bone formation and bone mass upon implantation of a bone tissue implant in said bone tissue. In particular, the invention relates to a bone tissue implant having an implant surface covered by an oxide layer comprising strontium ions and a method for the manufacture thereof. A blasting powder comprising strontium ions, a method for locally increasing bone formation, and the use of strontium ions or a salt thereof for manufacturing a pharmaceutical composition for locally increasing bone formation are also provided by the present invention.

The invention provides a biocompatible article having a surface comprising collagen fibrils attached to said surface via one or more linker molecules, wherein each of said collagen fibrils is attached to at least one of said one or more linker molecules at a proximal end of the fibril, and wherein each of said collagen fibril has a proximal portion extending from said proximal end to a point P along said fibril, wherein, for a majority of said fibrils, each fibril at said point P is oriented so as to form an angle &#x3b1;in the range of 0&#xb0; to 45&#xb0; to the surface normal N at the point of attachment of said fibril to said surface. The collagen fibril-coated surface has improved biocompatibility and is useful in a medical implant intended for implantation into soft tissue or bone tissue.
