An acoustic device and method of making said acoustic device. The acoustic device comprises a diaphragm having resonant bending wave modes in the operating frequency range, and a plurality of electromechanical transducers coupled to the diaphragm. The positioning and mechanical impedance of the transducers are such that at least a selected number of the resonant bending wave modes are balanced so that the net transverse modal velocity over the area of the diaphragm tends to zero with the balancing of the resonant bending wave modes being achieved substantially by the positioning and mechanical impedance of the transducers. The parameters of the diaphragm may be such that there are a plurality of nodal grouped locations at or around which the nodal lines of a selected number of resonant modes are clustered. Each transducer may be mounted at one of the plurality of nodal grouped locations.

Bending wave acoustic device and method of making thereof

A loudspeaker comprising a panel-form acoustic member adapted for operation as a bending wave radiator and an electrodynamic moving coil transducer having a voice coil mounted to the acoustic member to excite bending wave vibration in the acoustic member. The junction between the voice coil and the acoustic member is of sufficient length in relation to the size of the acoustic member to represent a line drive such that the acoustic member has a mechanical impedance which has a rising trend with bending wave frequency.

Loudspeakers

A vehicle windscreen accessory comprising a body member, an adjustable support structure for the body member whereby the position of the body member can be adjusted, the body member comprising a mirror member and a loudspeaker having a bending wave panel-form acoustic member, the mirror member and panel-form member being integral. The accessory can be in the form of, e.g., a sun visor or a rear view mirror.

Vehicle loudspeaker

A trim panel, e.g., a roof lining for a vehicle passenger compartment, characterized in that the trim panel comprises an integral acoustic radiator and a vibration exciter mounted on the radiator to launch bending waves into the radiator to cause it to resonate to produce an acoustic output. The acoustic radiator has a periphery which is integral with the radiator and the trim panel.

A vehicle having a passenger compartment with a moulded headlining to which an exciter is coupled and together forming a distributed mode acoustic radiator, the headliner providing a bass acoustic response when resonating. A mid/high frequency acoustic radiator also may be carried by the headlining. Other interior components of the vehicle (seats, door panels, visors, etc.) also may comprise acoustic radiators.
