Methods, systems, and computer-readable storage media for data migration in an upgrade procedure executed on a software system include actions of initiating the upgrade procedure, determining a first set of tables of a source database that include data to be converted before being first written to a target database, converting data of the first set of tables to provide first converted data, and writing the converted data to one or more tables in the target database.

Combined database migration and structure conversion within maintenance procedures

A system and method for database migration is provided. In an example embodiment, the database migration technique may include a first connection to a relational database, a second connection to an in-memory database, and a migration framework to analyze the data structures of the relational database so as to identify first and second subsets of data structures. The first subset of data structures is migrated to the in-memory database during an uptime period of the relational database, and the second subset of data structures is migrated to the in-memory database during a downtime period of the relational database.

The subject matter disclosed herein provides methods and apparatus, including computer program products, for upgrading software. In one aspect there is provided a method. The method may include copying a source application server to form a shadow application server, the copying including copying a repository table and a customizing table to form a shadow repository table and a shadow customizing table. Moreover, the upgrade may be implemented at the shadow application server. The upgrade may be applied to a first synonym of the shadow repository table and a second synonym of the shadow customizing table. The first synonym may enable the shadow application server to connect to the shadow repository table, when the upgrade is being implemented. The second synonym may enable the shadow application server to connect to the shadow customizing table, when the upgrade is being implemented. The method may also include switching to the upgrade by renaming the shadow repository table and the shadow customizing table to identifiers corresponding to the repository table and customizing table of the source application server. Methods, systems, and articles of manufacture are disclosed for upgrading a database using of a shadow system. During an upgrade, the shadow system or repository is built as a new instance on the database. The shadow system may be a complete central instance and comprise the new release to be installed in the database. The new release or 'destination release' may represent the release(s) of software application(s) and/or data that the user wants to run in the future. The destination release may replace a 'source release' of software application(s) and/or data currently running on the database as part of a main productive system. In one embodiment, the shadow system may be operated in parallel with the main productive system to minimize the required downtime for the upgrade.
