The present invention relates to a method for the production of nanoparticulate metal(III) vanadates or vanadate/phosophate mixed crystals, comprising the reaction in a reaction medium of a reactive vanadate source and optionally a phosphate source dissolvable or dispersible in the reaction medium and of a reactive metal(III) salt dissolvable or dispersible in the reaction medium under heating, wherein the reaction medium contains water and a polyol in a volume ratio of 20/80 to 90/10, and the particles thereby obtained. The synthesis provides a high yield of metal(III) vanadate or vanadate/phosphate having a narrow particle size distribution. Doped embodiments thereof are distinguished by excellent luminescence properties.

Luminescent inorganic nanoparticles comprising: (a) a core made from a first metal salt or oxide being surrounded by (b) a shell made from a second metal salt or oxide being luminescent and having non-semiconductor properties. Luminescent core/shell nanoparticles comprising a luminescent core and method of making thereof

A process for synthesizing nanoparticles, in particular metal salt nanoparticles. To the synthesis mixture is added a modifying reagent which binds, by means of a first functional group, to the nanoparticle surface and which carries a second functional group for binding to molecules which are specifically selected in dependence on the subsequent use of the nanoparticles. This dispenses with a postsynthetic, separate, application-specific modification step. A new substance class, the pentaalkyl iminobis(methylenephosphono)carboxylates, are particularly suitable for this purpose. These modifying reagents permit the nanoparticles to grow in a specifically controlled manner and, at the same time, modify the surface of the growing nanoparticles, (in-situ) during the synthesis, such that the particles can be very readily dissolved in a large number of solvents and carry functional groups for coupling on molecules, resulting in the particles having, immediately after having been synthesized, a certain all-round usability.

Production and use of in situ-modified nanoparticles

The invention relates to synthesis of nanoparticles, in particular to methods for producing nanoparticles with networks consisting of Z sulphate (Z=magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), strontium (Sr), barium (Ba) or the binary mixtures thereof). The inventive method consists in synthesising the nanoparticles by crystal growth from an ion Z source and a sulphate ion source in a liquid phase mixture. The invention produces Z sulphate nanoparticles having a small diameter and uniformly dispersible in water or other solvents in a simple way. Co-ordinating solvents like glycerine, glycol ethylene and other polyethylene glycols, polyalcohols or dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO) are used for the synthesis mixture.
