A system for determining the distance from and the direction to an object includes an emitter and at least two receiver elements for receiving a signal which is transmitted by the emitter and reflected by the object. The receiver elements are arranged as a linear array, as two linear arrays situated at an angle to one another, as an array which surrounds the emitter and forms a circle, or as a two-dimensional array. The diameter of the array may be greater than one-half the wavelength of the signal, and the receiver elements each have an individual surface area whose height or diameter corresponds at most to one-half the wavelength of the signal, and the emitter has a height or a diameter which is greater than one-half the wavelength of the signal.

A method for detecting the surface character of objects in road traffic or of persons, especially pedestrians, vehicles, obstacles and the like, in which signals are emitted from a vehicle that are reflected by a person or an object, and in which the reflected signals are received and evaluated in the vehicle, wherein the emitted signals are transmit pulses whose echo pulses are received, and based on the signal characteristics of the echo pulses, the surface character is inferred, and from that, it is inferred whether a person or an object is positioned in front of the vehicle.

An echo-signal monitoring device having a plurality of transceiver units for transmitting signals and receiving the echoes reflected by an external object and an analyzer unit for estimating the distance from the monitoring device to the external object on the basis of the received echoes is characterized in that the device has an operating mode for calculating the relative position of the transceiver units from one another on the basis of the reflected echoes.

Monitoring device and method using echo signals

In a device for bistatic radar applications, at least two spaced-apart radar sensors having separate carrier-frequency oscillators are provided, which do not require phase synchronization. The pulse modulation is carried out time-synchronously for all transmitter and receiver pairs. The cross-echo signals can be analyzed in an analyzing unit, in which a mixing of the transmitted and received signals takes place.
