The invention relates to a pulse starting device and a starting method for a discharge lamp, in particular a high-pressure discharge lamp for a motor vehicle headlamp. The starting device has a transformer which has either two primary windings which are connected in parallel and are both coupled inductively to the at least one secondary winding, or instead has a primary winding which consists of a wide metal strip and is wound, separated by an electric insulation, over the at least one secondary winding. The starting device according to the invention has a compact design which permits the complete starting device to be accommodated in the lamp cap.

The invention relates to an ignition apparatus for a discharge lamp, in picular high-pressure discharge lamp for motor vehicle headlights. The ignition apparatus, which is preferably designed as a pulse ignition device, is accommodated in the lamp base. According to the invention, it has; a plate (1), which is composed of an electrically conductive material, is matched to the geometry of the base and on which at least the ignition capacitor (C1) and the spark gap (F1) are fastened, at least one first electrical connection of the ignition capacitor (C1) and at least one first electrical connection of the spark gap (F1) being electrically conductively connected to the plate (1).

The invention concerns an electric lamp, particularly a high-pressure disrge lamp or halogen bulb with a base on one side for a motor-vehicle headlight. The base of the lamp of the invention has a base sleeve (110) comprised of an electrically insulating material and a mounting element (111) also comprised of an electrically insulating material, which bears lamp bulb (116) and which is joined with base sleeve (110). According to the invention, a metal part (121) is anchored in mounting element (111) and a metal ring (122) is anchored in base sleeve (110), whereby metal ring (122) is equipped with several shaped spring-type weld lugs (122), which are welded with metal part (121) anchored in mounting element (111).

To protect the plastic material of a plastic base (2) holding a single-en high pressure discharge vessel (1) in position with respect to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and heat emitted from the discharge vessel in operation of the lamp, a cover element (7, 7') of UV radiation and high temperature resistant material, such as a ceramic and preferably aluminum oxide, is positioned between the discharge vessel and the plastic material of the base, located to shield the plastic base from UV and heat radiation. The cover element is, essentially, in disk or plate form, and irremovably connected to the base, for example by pin extensions integral with the base, passing through recessed openings in the cover element, and headed over, in the form of rivet or button heads, for example by ultrasonic welding.
